Banty for Meath Job

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Banty was very poor in the manner he dealt with the goalkeeping issue in the c/ship !! Good football brain but poor man management !!

Harnan might have got the job on this own if he didn't jump onto the banty ticket

cavan slasher what are you on about good footballing brain?? If you look at any interview he done he always backed the team that beat monaghan. In my opinion he is a great motivator but seriously lacks tactical awareness. Just look at this years championship makes changes when after ten minutes in the games against armagh and fermanagh. Yet in the ulster final when subsitutions had to made in the ulster final he didn't do it. His only success with monaghan was beating meath in a micky mouse division two title. He Claims to have brought monaghan from division 4 to division 1. Back in 2005 when he took over meath were in this so called division four

Sure the Meath backs were a shambles all because they had no proven backline coach This idea of hand passing the ball in the backline is no way forward Hopefully Harnan will be the man to improve this end of the team

Shaggylegend,

Interviews don't make a team or a manager !! A few years ago Banty was unlucky not to have beaten Kerry and if they had they were good enough to win Sam. That was not down to luck !!

And what did banty do that day he took off the man of the match rory woods with ten minutes to go,back he also put stephen gollogy as a half back on declan o sullivan at the start of the second half, gollogly never played there before in his live and who got the goal in that game declan o sullivan. kerry had a break for seven weeks previous to that. Monaghans sole aim was to win an ulster title, but in 6 years in charge we won four matches in ulster and never won an ulster championship match in our home ground... Banty brought a backroom team in 05 of gerry mccarville he won 2 county titles with cavan gaels and an ulster league title, he was the most decorated player in monaghan history. he also had bernie murray and gerry hoey won as player managers won county titles with stabannon parnells in louth. If he didn't have them men he would never have got the job. after two years he got rid of them and brought in mcelkennon and after a bad year in 09 he brought in grimley. He cost the monaghan county board a fortune and never delivered any silverware. Sligo lost to kerry in 09 and kerry won an all ireland are you saying sligo could have won an all ireland if they had beaten kerry??

Shaggylegend,

You may be right but Rory was beginning to suffer physically that day and it is easy to use hindsight to make arguments. Also club football and county football are two different animals. Again though you could well be right !!

just to clear a few things up here, not everyone up here in monaghan have the same views as SHAGGY .. monaghan will b playing div 1 football for the third time since 2006 , we were ranked 31st in the country before that, 1 div 2 title , 2 ulster finals , and more trips to croke park than we had ever thought off, tommy got an all star, was nominated for another, damien nominated twice, dessie nominated twice and gary once. monaghan have 11 irish news all star awards of which 10 have come since 2005 , so BANTY wasn"t a bad manager. only for some back stabbers here we should still have him,, SHAGGY ya must be barred from one of his night clubs??????

I am a loyal supporter of monaghan. under eamon mcenaney monaghan made progress but unfortunatly the jack mccarville reign brought monaghan backwards. It was actually a meath man who turned the corner. He brought believe to this current group of players, Colm Coyle brought through an under 21 team in 03 that is the spine of the monaghan team. In 03 He won the mckenna cup, a piece of silverware banty couldn't win. in 03 monaghan beat the all ireland champions armagh lost to a down team in casement and shold have beaten them only poor shooting. After that we beat a westmeath team who the following year won a leinster title. then we lost to meath in clones. he put the belief in the players. MONAGHAN were never rated 31 in the country this is a massive spin monaghan to bulid his own reputation. Banty did bring monaghan forward but not without the large financial backing of the county board. Monaghan Had the players to win an ulster title. He made monaghan a media circus, the players even put a media ban on him, he had closed training sessions forcing other county teams to train else were in case they would leak tactics. ask Honest monaghan supporters with a rich heritage in the gaa, they will give there opinion, not just the corduff, magheracloone or monaghan, ask blayney ask latton ask clontibret ask scotstown they will give your honest opinion.

VERY worringly, I heard that Cooney is the preferred choice, and the Drogheda Indo is carrying the same story.
Apparently he 'impressed' in the interview. Jeez, I could do a great interview - aren't achievements on the pitch more important?

Boylanabu Sure O Malley was part of the back room staff but he has no record of successfully coaching a half decent back line and from his playing days he wasn't the greatest kicker of a ball so maybe this is why the present team has developed that trait and remember he was surrounded by one of the greatest back lines in Meath history

'he wasn't the greatest kicker of a ball'

Jaysus there's some awful ***** talked on here. RO'M is regarded as one of the greatest corner-backs in Meath's history, and in the history of the sport.
I don't think he had a problem kicking the ball ffs.

o malley was a great player the best corner back iv ever seen we wouldt off lost the 91 all ireland final if he was playing that day .havin said that i know alot off the lads from the st colmcilles didt rate him as as coach when he was there

In my opinion O Malley was only a hand passer of the ball and lucky he was surrounded by Lyons and Harnan he wouldn't get into the top ten backs of the present time and one wouldn't have to be a rocket scientist to see why this year the Meath backs were a shambles without the help of Kenny a forward where would Meath have got, as I said before EOB was a decent enough manager But had no one to help him to inflict a bit of fire into the backs

If the County Board appoint Gerry Cooney ahead Seamus McEeaney and Liam Harnan there will be war as the majority of the players reportedly want Banty as Manager and I have never heard of Gerry Cooney until he was nominated.
