Standard of club football in the county is poor.

I agree the idea of a development squad in the off season is not the perfect solution (there is also sigerson to work in) but if 2/3 lads came out above their peers in it, it would serve a purpose. Plus, on a selfish front, it would give us all something to discuss from October through January as to who was coming out on top in the development squad.

I'm even starting to get a big brother idea where one player gets voted off every week with the eventual winner gettting a spot in the championship squad! I might give Sky a shout to see how much they would pay me for the idea!

development squads isnt so much a bad idea,if it were run throughout the country, and the development teams played maybe before the senior team or that weekend durin the league, itd stop lads from sittin on the bench for the year!but in all honesty do u think that would happen?!why dont they use the junior championship to give lads who hadnt been playin, but training, with the seniors a chance?that rule about senior club players and all is stupid!

off the point a bit there.jinxie i 100% agree with you, more emphasis and encouragement and structure should be put in place at underage!but it also should happen at senior level in clubs too,its all about bringing young lads in through a smooth transititon, dont get me wrong theyl learn the hard things in matches etc,but if there is bad setups and unorganised competitions do u think a young fella will be encouraged to turn up for training and all the rest?and all club players want to do after all the training during the winter is play matches, and more matches, but could be left waiting for weeks without a game, the co. board need to put in place a system where there are games week in week out,and that might make teams stronger and hungry???

I agree with you re the matches for underage.
Somebody made the point in a previous post about losing younger players to other sports. That's becoming a big problem & it's all down to bad organisation of the competitions at under age. Minors play almost no football during the summer. They should be playing a game every week.
Even when a tournament starts, there's no set plan in place or garuntee as to when games will be played.
If these young lads are involved in soccer or rugby is much better organised & there's way more games for lads to play on a much more regular basis.
It's not long before they see which one is better run.

If this is sorted it will help us keep our best young talents & that's another way the seniors of the future will improve.

James T your argument is flawed on some many issues I dont know where to start.. the main issue I have is your comparing the club champions at various levels against other counties so at best you are comparing 3 teams and forgetting about the standard of the rest. What has that got to do with club standard..

Then you make another crazy statement about standard of NOM and Skyrne in the 80s & 90 and the Tones/Sheridans would destroy them teams. Firstly Skyrne won nothing in the 80's maybe your mixing them up with Walterstown who also in my opionion would walk all over teams in the current championship.

Then you have a dig a north meath clubs.. sorry we're not all from urban sprawls but Kells won it in 91 with pure football, The Wood argueably one of the most skillfull club teams Ive witnessed in meath football won it in 96 and lost 2 finals and then oldcastle who Dunboyne beat in 98 final.

Correct me if im wrong here but Nobber was the only North Meath team in the 80's joined by Oldcastle,Ballinlough,Cortown,Carnaross and the Wood in the 90's who are all in entitled to go senior once u win inter.

Club football in rural parts of Meath has dropped considerably, trainin attendance is shocking in alot of cases, another indicator that club football is poor is that at most grades the difference between relegation and semi finalist is nothing.
An example of this Rathkenny and Walterstown fighting to stay senior last year, now one in semi, the other beaten by 2 points to make semi.

Most rural clubs are struggling to put out underage teams, this never happened in the 80's and 90's.. and a strong young player from rural clubs can see he is not going to win anything so travels to play rugby or soccer or whatever so he can compete . This in the long term effects the standard. This does not effect NOM's,Dunboyne,Ashbourne etc, but it will effect Wolf Tones, Seneschalstown and even the mighty men of Skyrne in the future

Club football needs a total overhaul and with the current co board we dont have the skills or vision to put this in place. I've suggested many times whats needs to be done..

Your memory of history is quiet poor if you think the NOM's team of the 80 would struggle in current club championship. That team was brilliant and at best only 3-4 were on the meath panel with only Cassells and Beggy on the team, to me that says the standard of the other clubs at various grades was high, now we have 7-9 members of NOM's team on the Meath squad and they have only one SFC to show for it over 5 year period.

ALSO James Meath were winning Leinsters,All-irelands, Div 1 National Leagues in the 80's,90's, not to mention minors,u21's.. maybe it was because those teams were littered with dirty bog warriors from north meath:)!!

Actually the fringe players on the county panel are releasd to play with their clubs to give them game time which is a new developement for Meath. I think meath clubs have been very unlucky at times in the club championships and there are counties like Dublin & Cork who's clubs are attracting players from all around. Clubs in Meath generallly run their teams on locals.
Jinxie, St Vincents actually won the all Ireland club in 2007 after beating the furze and the furze were also beaten in the Leinster club final in 1994 by Kilmacud who went on to win the all ireland that year as well.

I stand corrected D/ASH did win the Leinster minor a few years ago. Still nobody who follows football in Meath can deny that we are not producing top class club teams consistently. There is a big football interest in Meath so we will always have decent club sides and a decent county side. But are county board and club officials willing to raise the bar and revamp football in the county. These are a few suggestions. Please share your opinions?

More amalgimations. Examples Duleek/ Bellewstown an BHG. BHG have a Keegan and D/B are a club on the way up. Bellewstown would be stuck in the midle of Junior B getting bet by second string senior teams. Now they either have a Junior B championship or have played in a SFC 1/4 final. Automatically most young lads interest in football has risin. Ask any bhg or d/b man and they will tell you they are just as proud to represent there new club.

Return to sixteen teams in the SFC with four groups of 4. Some matches just dont have the cut and thrust of championship football any more with teams able to loose 2 and draw 1 and still go through.

The fixture system is a joke. Run the Feis cup off in january/ Feb. 4 matches could be played in Dungany on one winters evening alone. Teams are playing challange matches and training at this stage anyway. Then run the Leauge off. More Saturday evening fixtures. Young lads enjoy a pint and Sunday afternoon is a major turn off for most lads. By the time thats over SFC could start with clubs having acces to there county players. Note kILDARE are playing there club leage finals this weekend.

Saint, Kildare maybe palying their league finals this weekend but their championship is way behind and have even hinted at seeking a deferral of their Leinster club first round match. Any bets on they getting a deferral unlike Sen'town last year. The Leinster Council Chairperson was a delegate from the opposing club so you can see where he was coming from. He used an excuse about a club u21 game when Meath looked for a deferral but it backfired a little when they were suprisingly well beaten in the u21 semi where they fully expected to progress and win out the competition.

Lads the standard of football will follow when we get better ref's in the county, we cant play good football with these refs, if you look at a lad they'd blow a free against you. now im not sayin all of them but 90% of them are awful in Meath.

SS6 - I have heard it all now. Its the refs fault for the standard of Club football in Meath.
With this logic the Counties with the best standards of Refs should be winning all the time and it is not down to the players available.

Maybe it is the umpire!; perhaps if we had more training courses for umpires our club footballers (I do not have a view one way or the other in regards to the actual standards compared to other counties) would be better. I think I'll ask our club delegate to propose this at the next county board meeting!! : )

Kildare will have a team in Leinster. Im sure this man was just looking after the best interests of his club like the rest of us.

its not all of the problem but it has alot to do with it, for example, Hurlin = if you put the refs from Meath (Burke, styler, etc) in Kilkenny for a club cham'ship game, can you imagine the trouble they would cause, the amount of time they would blow their whistle and the amount of lads that would be sent off by there stupid decisions and awful refing...............................................I think Kilkenny are doing alright the last few years.

Football bring the refs up to the north (Down Tyrone etc) or even south to Kerry completely different style its much better, fast and hard hitting, these counties would throw one of our refs out of their county if they tryed to ref a game there..............some of the refs decisions in our club games are awful bad.

So basically if you have a good ref = you have better football played = better footballers = which will improve the county team as I said earlier its not all of the problem but has alot to do with it

So the club setup is to blame for the Meath team being average??Eh no,the other way around, the quality of club football in Meath is poor because the whole meath club scene is put on hold because of the County team.It is absolutly ridiculous, fixtures are all over the place because of this, with huge gaps in between games.Clubs find it near impossible to keep the thing going, and prepare right for their next game because of the hold up.Club teams cant build up a head of steam and improve, thus bringing down the standard.
I may be wrong about alot of things, but I know this to be true,it is blatantly obvious. So until the county board starts paying attention to the club scene and how it is held to ransom by the county team, then I couldnt care less how the Meath team does.In fact the sooner Meath are knocked out every year the better,so we can all go back to playing our own matches.
