Ten of the best club players not on the Meath team

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I definatly agree with the bull there about the likes of Barry Lynch, Rory Maguire etc. neither really seemed up to county standard although I do think Terry Skelly is worth another go! Paddy Smyth and Brian Clarke are 2 players who have impressed me anytime i've seen them over the last couple of years... I also agree with bar3 about Terence Farrelly from Oldcastle, top club footballer, who deserves at least one crack at it.....

latoucg... barry lynch is not over 30.. hes bout 27. few yrs older than me.

thers a lot of junior players who wud fit onto any senior team in the county, they shud b given a chance, boylan won all-ireland wit players mainly from junior and inter players.
the opinion of sum people think that if your a gud club player u automatically wil b a gud county player... gud county players arnt always gud club players. ie, grahem geraghty.
gud club but bad at county level wud be;grahem reilly,
coincidence ther both grahems.

paddy smyth is the best forward not on panel in my opinion. rumours are he decided against playing intercounty due to being unsure of being able to put the time/comitment levels in. which is fair enough, ya have to respect him for giving other lads a chance if he feels he can't give 100% himself. shame tho as he is a really intelligent player, something meath lack at the moment, a new giles stlye player to create for the rest of the forward line. we have no 'play-maker' at present.

Justin O'Reilly from Moylagh. He is consistently scoring 4 and 5 points a game. He has blistering pace and can kick off either foot. A real class act

Paddy Smyth and Henry Finnegan.
I think that Shepherd form the Tones will be as good as Seamus Kenny eventually.
I dont think Steven Corrigan would be up there though.
Iv been warning people about this Justin Reilly guy from North Meath. Serious player if a wee bit small. I was surprsied to hear Moylough were beaten.
Il be interested to get a look at a few of these Oldcastle players. One or two could possibly come into the frame next season.

On another note i dont like the way people refer to certain players as being too old or too young to play county. Some guys may just stop playing or are injured for long periods and may come back into form in their late twenties or even very early thirties They may not have many miles on the clock. Some young guys may show promise at underage but may not physically be able to step up. Age should not be taken into account only form in my opinion. On the other hand for the Meath Junir team, i would open it to all grades and have basically an under 25 team playing.

Yes james T Justin Reilly is a very good player and should be given his chance on maybe the junior squad, in relation to oldcsatle, there are alot of very effective players, Terence Farrelly along with Niall mangan, Barry Curran, Patrick Gilseain and young Rahill are all worth a stint with a county panel, these young players have a lot to offer up, also TJ garry from Dunderry is another quality player.

BAR3 - I was at the inter semis last week and I didnt think that Terence Farrelly stood out - that was the first time I have seen Oldcastle this year so maybe he has been better in other games. I was impressed though by the young Gilsenan chap playing wing half forward. Is he the same lad who was on the meath minors a few years back? He looked lively - full of running and good at picking up breaks. The Dunderry full back was moved out on him and that put the brakes on him a bit but he destroyed Dunderry in the first half- might be worth a look. Always dangerous though to judge players on 1 or 2 games- he could have been hopeless for the rest of the year for all I know.

Yes oldcastle have a very small team and maybe there not cut out for it?? farrelly, gilseain and curran are 3 small players but are well able ta take hits and play football, brian clarke is another small player but i think he should be given his chance anyway. Paddy smyth is another player who is well able for the step up and i dont understand why he hasnt been given his chance??

Paddy Smyth was asked to be on the panel but he was going to the States for a few months, only got back in February or March so he couldn't train with the team. I'd be very surprised if he's not on the panel for the league next year if he's still knocking about.

Thought TJ Garry was a big disappointment on Saturday against Oldcastle. Would Mickey Newman be worth a go? Shankey from the wood seems to be in good form as well at wing back though Nobber clearly had a plan to stop his runs up the field. the no.10 pulled him back a few times, got the two of them booked then got switched over to the other wing. Terry Farrelly would be the pick of the bunch in Oldcastle, all the others are good but we're talking senior inter county football here.

anfearbeag- Ya the wing half forward was paddy gilseain he was on the meath minors two years ago and did very well with them but he was held back by injuries that year!

Barry Lynch is 29 fact.

Meathman105 all of the Oldcastle players you have named are usefull footballers at Intermediate level but do you honestley think they would be good enough for intercounty football? I think only 1 or 2 of them guys would make it onto a strong senior club team.

Have seen Terry Farrelly a few times at this stage apart from the year and Saturday was the quietest he'd been in a game but still done ok, no 10 was a little flyer for Oldcastle.
Don't think Oldcastle have anyone up to senior inter county now though very small, surprised to see Ronan Farrelly not starting is he injured?
What about Paul Kieran of Meath Hill? Represented Meath at under 21 and junior, age might be against him but worth a look.

Yea thunderstruck maybe your right auctually when you look at the likes of Cork and Armagh, some of them Oldcastle boys would be very small, but they have the ability to become very good footballers, alot of them Oldcastle boys have played intercounty including Farrelly, Rahill, Curran and Gilseain and i think Mangan?? and know the standard. rory maguire is due a chance (again)

Ronan farrelly is struggling with injurys as does niall mangan, Terry Farrelly might get a look but think that might be it, i think there is only 2 lads on that oldcastle team over 25.
