Looking at the names put forward, there are very few that represent an injustice in them not being on the current panel. Some because they are good club players (Mooney from St Pats) and some because they have had alot of injury problems (Paudge Howard from Duleek) and have never managed a decent run. i think that niall mooney should be in the meath squad, i know there is a big difference between club and inter county football... but he would be the type of player that should be suited to playing county football as he is very fast and unbelievably fit! He was the best player on show against seneschelstown in the championship, he was miles ahead of the oposition. I just presumed EOB or any of his selectors were not at the game. keeper91 (Meath) - Posts: 25 - 16/07/2009 17:34:01 348788 Link 0 |

Seanied - think DowdtoFoleygoal is closer to the mark than you are. I would disagree that 60 - 80% of footballers don't play intercounty until they are older than 20. If you look at the current Meath team (ie the team that started last Saturday) most of the lads were knocking around the panel and playing either league or championship (or both) by the time they were 20. Paddy O Rourke, Harrington, Moyles, O'Connor, King, McGuinness, Crawford, Brian Meade, Stephen Bray, Big Joe, Cian Ward, Brian Farrell. Would have thought all of these were playing inter-county by the age of 20?.....Peadar Byrne, Seamus Kenny and David Bray would be the exceptions rather than the rule.... moyles, McGuinness, Brian Meade, Stephen Bray, Cian Ward, Brian Farrell were all 21 or older when they made the meath team but i see your point about a lot of lads making it by 20 but i strongly believe a lot more make it after the 21 age mark!!!! seanied (Meath) - Posts: 27 - 16/07/2009 21:37:44 349028 Link 0 |

Maybe 21 is closer than 20, but if guys are going to make it they should be close to the team at the age of 20 or so. This is proven by the fact that the average all ireland winning team is normally 23-25 years of age. DowdtoFoleyGoal (Meath) - Posts: 292 - 17/07/2009 15:00:26 349843 Link 0 |

Niall Mooney(St Pats)-undoubtedly the best player in the county not on the county team!! Pats4Keegan09 (Meath) - Posts: 10 - 06/09/2009 14:50:17 416948 Link 0 |
im staying away from pats players on purpose because this thread will end up with everyone showing their club bias.i reckon mark battersby ricky nolan andew tormey niall kelly and graham reilly are all worth a look at by the management but what i really hope eamonn and the selectors do is take in every single game left in the senior inter and junior championships.leave no stone unturned. stamullenman (Meath) - Posts: 392 - 07/09/2009 13:09:12 417931 Link 0 |
I was at a Pats match one night, just happened to be standing with two former All Ireland winning Meath men and they both agreed Niall mooney was not up to senior county football. They reckoned he just lacks the little bit extra you need. Too often he takes the wrong option after working himself in to great positions. In the last couple of minutes on Saturday night he brilliantly ran half the lenght of the pitch, defenders in his wake and when an easy point was on, elected to pass and ended giving the ball away. qprmeath (None) - Posts: 434 - 07/09/2009 13:22:51 417951 Link 0 |
What is the 'bit' that he lacks? qpr that was Daithi Whyte that had the handpass intercepted after the run, not Niall Mooney. keeper91 (Meath) - Posts: 25 - 07/09/2009 14:00:44 418004 Link 0 |
Keeper, you are right about Daithi Whyte having a great run that came to nothing. But I counted thre times in the last few minutes Niall Mooney had the ball in positions close to the Duleek goal and no scores resulted. The bit he lacks is the vision to take the right option when the chips are down. Compare his performance to Shane O Rourkes in the Simonstown game. There was no comparison. Dont get me wrong, Im not saying Niall is not a great dedicated club player but I believe he lacks what needed for inter county. qprmeath (None) - Posts: 434 - 07/09/2009 17:24:06 418296 Link 0 |
