Ref Threatened - 6 Like(s)
Down senior league;; ref was threatened, walked off at half-time. Amazing that anyone would want to become a ref, abuse on boards like this, spills over into on-field threats and actual physical assault.
A change of culture is urgently needed. Kildare hit the bar, then miss an open goal, yet the manager blames the ref????

Can the GAA survive the Rugby onslaught - 3 Like(s)
Replying To LoyalRoyal: "Gaelic Games being unique to Ireland and Irish people will always be popular here. You can go watch soccer or rugby almost anywhere in the world. That's why Irish soccer is never really going to take off. Rugby can draw a crowd because it has a smaller pool of competitive teams and we can reach the top relatively easily.
There is nothing like the GAA anywhere else coupled with the fact that its a core part of our national identity and psyche. Rugby is a good sport and I do like it, the RWC coming here would be good for the country and wont do any harm to the GAA that I can see. Rugby can't top hurling or football as a sporting spectacle for me." Rugby is in a fortunate position; It's international, but in a very limited way (almost exclusively ex-British colonies, so while there is an international element, it's not hard to be among the best teams in the world. In contrast GAA is not international, + lacks the associated glamour, while soccer is truly international, which is why even to qualify for a world cup is a major achievement. Also rugby is a public school game, and public schoolboys dominate RTE and the media

I have some experience in this field, and I can't see any way there'll be GAA sports this year. We'll be very fortunate if next year isn't a write-off as well

I have some experience in this area; this year is definitely gone, and maybe next year as well. There are too many uncertainties about this disease, for which we have no immunity, no cure and and no vaccine. and which seems to affect different people in different ways. We also don't know the degree of immunity conferred by infection. We are facing a new normal, will just have to learn to live with it

The same situation in many big towns e.g. Newry in Co Down, population ~30K, only 3 clubs, all of them 3rd or 4th division. This is where the money should be going

The Corona Virus And Possible Effects To GAA Matches - 2 Like(s)
Replying To KillingFields: "18 months is bit over estimation IMO. Sport will be back before then. Vaccines will be developed in some form. While social distancing will happen in some form for foreseeable future you cant atop everything to live in fear
And players over 30 will most certainly play the sport again once it's back. Time off and not training could reboot many to play on longer with this time off aiding them not hindering them" If something positive comes out of this, it might be a different approach to club football. Football is supposed to be a hobby, but even club footballers now face spartan lifestyles and serious training demands. This makes it v difficult for men with children, or with time-consuming jobs, or with a significant commute to commit. Bear in mind that at this they are in the early stages of their careers, and have to make a life for themselves.
Of course once one team starts on Christmas Day, and working out in the gym, and training 3 times each week, every team has to do it. We are taking all the enjoyment out of our sport
I contrast our men's football team with our ladies' team. For the ladies, it's all about friendship and supporting each other, and it's wonderful to see how our local team has bonded together; occasionally they win something, but that is secondary.

I always like to see northern teams do well, but Tyrone for years have displayed an unpleasant degree of cynicism Feigning injury was something new in football, but from getting Marsden sent off to lying down when your hair is ruffled , Tyrone really specialize in this

When You See That Horrible Football (Over And Back ) Now Played People Will Soon Need To Be Payed To Go To A Game - 2 Like(s)
The best way to watch football now is to record or pause, then go for a stroll, come back and fast-forward during the over-and-back. Only wish I could do the same for club games, where the 15-players-behind-the-ball is even more tedious; we still haven't found a rule to disincentive this tactic.
Would 13-a-side help? Would also be a benefit to smaller counties and clubs.

Replying To Trump2020: "Would you say next year is 50/50 in your experience? What odds would you give 1. This year? 2. Next year?" This year is definitely out. Next year will probably also be impossible, unless a vaccine is developed, which is at best uncertain. We could always start injecting county players with detergent, as Trumpy has suggested.

Dublin v Kildare - 2 Like(s)
Love the Dubs and their followers and the way they play football, but when Kildare are being lauded but coming within 9 ps it shows how unequal the contest has become. Time for junior, intermediate? It works well in club football and ladies football at both county + club level. Or Split Dublin into north/south/east/west? Imagine the intensity of the local derbies!!!!!

befair (Down) - Posts:132 - 28/11/2016 16:58:58To describe rugby as international in a limited way is a very skewed slant at things. To say its not hard to be among best teams in the world is extremely ignorant of what it takes to be a very good side
Rugby is far from a public school game. May be a case in a few very small areas of the country where its dominated by those who attend fee paying schools but that isnt case with the majority of people who play the sport" Well played Ormond. Simply contradict each of his points point blank. These people who go around backing up their points with logical arguments, statistics or maybe even reference material are time wasters.
Ye are like a North Korean news report"]Gear, Equipment, Coaches."]The episode with Martin Johnson at Lansdowne Rd a few years illustrates the point, when he made our president step off the red carpet and walk on the grass. Can you imagine him doing that in any other sport? I any other country? But he knew he could get away with it, because they are nearly all ex-British colonies and ex-public schoolboys.

Unlikely there will be any GAA games this year. Might be a good time for reflection that GAA sports are a hobby, that shouldn't require a spartan existence, with training regimes, even at club level, that make it v difficult for anyone married with children. But once one team does it, everyone has to do it; it's running to stand still, and takes much of the enjoyment away from our games.

Beggan's point from play today for Scotstown was scarcely believable; must have been 70 yds, and cleared the bar with something to spare. And at a crucial time also.
And as a encore, kicked the winning point from the 45 line, out on the wing, last kick of the game.
