County's Best Championship 15 of the last 50 years

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

The Johnjoe O'Reilly they are referring to in team of the last 50 years is Johnjoe from Crosserlough, and he did play on the forty.
His nephew Cormac O'Reilly plays with Crosserlough and his grand-nephew Jack Brady plays for Ramor.

Ray caralon is Cavan Gaels now but when he was playing for Cavan he was cuchullians. Tom maguire I think is Ballyconnell or kildallon .

Thanks. Would Aidan Connolly be worth a shout for that team?

Connolly wasn't the most committed bloke. He wouldn't play for McHugh in 97. Anyway ollie Brady was a far better centre half back.

Connolly was a very committed player. His best performances for us were at wing half back and full back. If we'd had him in 97 we probably would have beaten Kerry and gone on to win a Sam. People always go on about how great a man-manager McHugh was, but he didn't handle Connolly well at all and Cavan suffered as a result. There was also the tragedy in the Baileboro club around that time that impacted on a lot of their players, especially Connolly. I'd have him ahead of Johnson any day in any position on the field.

However, in the context of the thread, I don't think he played enough football for Cavan to make the best 15.

have to agree with richiej, towbar was one of the best about but he didn't stay long enough in the fold to be considered one of the greats..

RichieJ ,
I don't understand why you would suggest that Towbar would not play for Cavan when he was dropped from the County Panel by the manager at that time. Did you do this as a way of supporting your argument that OB was a better CHB ? Consider they were different times and his level of ability can not be coached into someone. I did not see OB play in his prime but Towbar was the most natural CHB that I have ever watch play the game. He obviously had issues that resulted in his exclusion but they were not related to his ability or performances.

Ondforty the reason Connolly didn't play in 97 were well documented and I'm not going to repeat them here. If you ever meet McHugh ask him. I did and he told me out straight why. But that's all water under the bridge now. Connolly was a decent half back but not one to be on a best 15 of the last 50 years

Ollie Brady was the finest centre half back I saw playing for Cavan. Then again I didn't see Tom maguire playing. But yes Texas was good.any player who could win an Allstar in centre back in 1978 from one of the weaker counties when Dublin and Kerry were both at their peak. That says it all

A few lads dont know their club history etc. The great Ray Carolan played for Cross later to become Cuchullains. The mighty Tom Maguire starred for Ballyconnell 1st Ulsters in the 60's which was a west Cavan amal. He then played with the Kildallan parish team as well as managing. John Joe was a wonderful centre forward on the great Crosserlough team.

Anyway here is my punt at the team of the last 50 yrs.
1.Paddy Lyons
2.Pat Tinnelly
3.Frankie Dolan
4.Damien O Reilly
5.Jim Reilly
6.Olly Brady/Tom Maguire
7.Jim Mc Donnell
8.Ray Carolan
9.Dermot Mc Cabe
10.Ronan Carolan
11.John Joe Reilly
12.Steve Duggan
13.Gene Cusack
14.Charlie Galllagher
15.Larry Reilly.
Subs:
Gabriel Kelly, Paul O Dowd, Peter Reilly, Stephen King, Jason Reilly,
Enda Mc Gowan, Olly Leddy, Paddy Mc Namee

There's two sides to every story Richie, you should know that. Do you believe half the rubbish from McHugh on TV?
Ollie Texas was inspirational but nowhere near the calibre of Tom Maguire. Tom was one of Cavan's finest and would have been our very best CHB where it not for the Gallant JJ

This thread shows how little some on this forum know about cavan football. Stephen king from kingscourt? Ray carolan from cavan gaels? One player who should be on that team is damian Reilly.

Derek mc Donnell was class footballer and paddy mc namee was super.

Ronan carolan was a great free taker but weak in open play ...but he did play well in open play the season we won the Ulster.

Larry Reilly has some phenomenal games but he could also be headless.

I remember Texas and he was entertaining and the crowd loved him ..he would not release the ball until he shouldered someone but he could be very weak defensively ..he was destroyed by intelligent centre forwards. Peter Reilly reminded me a bit of him when he played in U21 Final ..he was marauding up front but his man was doing even more damage behind him.

Derek mc Donnell was class when he was in the mood. Phil lightening Murray worth a mention too as is Tom lynch. Andy mc Cabe too was a no nonsense corner back . Sean leddy RIP was great in the half backline. Ollie leddy ciaran o keefe were fine fielders though maybe not consistent enough. Enda McGowan rarely played a bad game in defence.JJ martain templeport graced many Cavan team over about 20 years.
