it seems congress passed a motion stating a player has to play county championship the previous year in order to represent the county the following year, directly to effect johnsons move, whether he has the patience to miss a summers ball remains to be seen.
great move by the GAA, this soccer style county hopping is the last thing the game needs

are you sure about millhouse.. i thought it was that a player must have played in the club championship before he could play for the county. that would mean "this year's" intermediate championship with st kevin's for Seanie. (which starts in a few weeks)

As a Cavanman living in Kildare for over 20 years I can no longer resist getting involved in this debate. Unfortunately Milhouse the motion passed refers to playing in the local championship in 'the current or previous year'. This means that if Seanie plays for St Kevins this year he may play for Kildare. The championship will commence in Kildare in May. It looks as though Seanie will indeed play with Kildare a county with which he has no apparent link except that he seems to be able to prove that he 'lives' in Kildare. Perhaps he does but that appears to be for the purposes of playing football with Kildare. The decision to play with St Kevin's is a a convenience as Kildare selector Niall Carew is from that club. Seanie's 'home' in Straffan is in a different parish. Fortunately for him the parish rule does not apply in Kildare.

I think that the whole long drawn out saga is sad from the point of view of Cavan football in that perhaps our most talented player of recent years has effectively been head hunted by Kildare management. Seanie appears to have been unsettled at County level for some time and also to some extent at club level. The famous 10 second phone call may have been welcomed by him as it gave him the opportunity to 'choose' Kildare as he said on KFM interview. He has certainly pursued this goal with great single mindedness and even the departure of Val Andrews has had no impact on his intent. It is ironic that his departure comes at time when Cavan is having great success at minor and U21 (much more than his 'chosen' county) and a player with his ability and the right attitude would surely be delighted to be leading a senior football revival in his native county?

Anyway it is not to be-maybe there is too much water under the bridge for Seanie to backtrack at this stage. I wish him and Kildare well but do not agree with what has happened which undermines the ethos of the GAA. Apart from Cavan I do follow the fortunes of Kildare as my nearest and dearest are true lillies. However I have never got the same satisfaction from watching a Kildare win as a Cavan one and I never will. I expect Seanie to do well with Kildare and also that Kildare will win Leinster this year. Just wondering though as he goes up the steps of the Hogan stand with his 'chosen' team mates will he not turn around and wish even for a moment that it was Clones on Ulster final day? I suspect that he will even if he would never admit it. After all over 12 years in the blue of Cavan and nearly 20 in the blue of the Gaels will be hard to forget.

S Goldrick you are correct. Player seeking inter-county transfer has to have played club championship in that county in previous or current year so Seanie would have to play club championship in Kildare this year before being eligible to play for Kildare. The Motion that was carried is Motion 5 which read as follows:

(5) That the following be adopted as a New Rule in Chapter 6 O.G.

Eligibility for Inter-County Teams

A Player shall have played in Club Championship with a Club in a County in
the previous or current year to be eligible to play in any Inter-County
Competition with that County, save as provided for in Rules 6.6 and 6.7.

Penalty
Player - 48 weeks Suspension
Team - On a Proven Objection - Award of Game to the Opposing Team.
On an Inquiry by the Committee-in Charge - Forfeiture of Game without Award
of Game to the Opposing Team or Fine, depending on the circumstances.

No you have to have played in the previous years championship.

I.e play club champ in 2012
Eligible for county in 2013.

But does the rule passed today come in with immediate effect?
Would it not be applicable for a certain date. And can it apply to transfers already in process?

Curragh blue. Very well put and I echo everything you said. Top class!! Have to say that Seanie sure picked a strange time to walk away from his native county, 2 Ulster u21 titles in a row and one Minor title. How many titles in the recent past have the Lillies won?

Thanks BreffniDub-just had to get it off my chest. It is worse again to be living in Kildare with this going on for so long.

Kildare were last in U21 final in 2007 and have no other recent success. Cavan are performing much better over the past three years. Having watched Cavan lose narrowly to Kildare in Newbridge in July 2008 (Seanie was superb!) I have no doubt that with McGeeney or another as good as manager and the same commitment as displayed by Kildare that we would have achieved at least as much as they have since then.

Back to Seanie. If he really wants to leave Cavan because of a ten second phone call from Val Andrews then now that Val has departed he must surely be reconsidering his position. Now that the Gaels have raised concerns he has the opportunity to row back if he wants to and avoid all that costly not to mention tiring commuting-though it is hardly costing him anyway!

sorry lads i hadnt fully read the exact rules being brought in.
curraghblue, do you, as a cavan man living in Kildare feel that SJ was head hunted, or was it his own doing, my line on the whole case was it was all his doing, i never thought of the possibility of him being effictively "tapped up" to use a soccer term!!

extremely bad if that was the case, whatever small bit of respect i still had for him would be lost if i thought that so, and for kieran mcgeeney also.

Milhouse I have no proof that Seanie was head hunted as such. However it is hard to believe that he woke up the morning after the ten second phone call and decided to 'chose' Kildare. Seanie's own explanation on Kildare radio for 'chosing' Kildare was that he likes the way Kildare play, that he admires Kieran McGeeney and also Julie Davis (former trainer at DCU) and that he knows Niall Carew who used to manage Maynooth college team. It is not a co-incidence that Niall Carew is involved with Seanie's 'new' club St Kevins. Since Seanie 'lives' in Straffan-in different parish to St Kevins-he has as much connection to them as he has to Kildare!

There have also been rumours of approaches to other players such as Dublin sub goalie-Savage. Kildare are a superbly trained committed team but short a little class to make a big break though hence some outside talent required or sought.

This is just my opinion and I do not want to affect your view of Seanie. Perhaps it has been a very frustrating few years with Cavan and he just wants success with another county. Cavan have very committed young players who have been competing at division 1 level over the past few years and we need a core of experienced players to bring them on. It is a pity that Seanie looks as though he will not be a part of that.

At this stage most Kildare followers would prefer if he did not get the transfer and that if they win it is with their own local talent. I agree with that sentiment.

Seems cavan gaels have now objected to the move, whats going on there. I thought the gaels wished him well!

probably now that val has gone, Seanie is having second thoughts and so are the club and county board. so rather that Seanie lose face and withdrw his transfer request, the way round it is to object... what a farce.

At this stage im fed up with all this rubbish...he is a Cavan man and should only want to play for Cavan and no one else...yes he had problems with previous managment and attitude..but a better player/man would have looked at himself and said..right its up to me to do my best and change my attitude and get on to my county team and prove that im a better man...instead he just decided to run away and try and play with another county, before you all round up on me i know he is one of the best forwards Cavan had in a long long time...but is he a team player??? is it the way a role model should behave??? personally i believe Cavan have scored more as a team now then when he was on the team

I don't believe Seanie will play for Cavan within the next few years. The amount of personel abuse he has taken this past few months was total uncalled for. People forget he was dropped and told he wouldn't be used. He didn't walk away. Now Terry was part of the management that dropped Seanie so there no reason to bring him back. So close this thread and move on.

poor seanie. He wants to go to another county, thats walking away in my boat. Mcgeeney is in his last yr at kildare, next manager might not want him and cavan might not want him either.
