rafa remind me how Longford minors are doing? you were on it for awhile weren't you? keep on your own county's page and worry about their state of football.

Was at an u10 blitz and a certain county coach had the kids using only they're weak foot. Correct me if im wrong but the majoriety of the kids there were like eight and nine years old and could harldly crasp kicking properly (continuesly) with they're good foot.. In my opinion the kids (at all age levels) need intensive coaching not just 'heres a ball now go solo and hop around that cone yonder'.. At home (Armagh) its small groups, many coaches and if you dont have enough coaches get some of your minors up and get them to help out, ratio of 1 coach to 5/8 players, no need to divide them up into backs, forwards etc (as many cavan coaches do) because they'll need to know how to block as a forward just as much as a defender needs to know how to direct a ball to where he want it to go; just like a forward scoring a point or goal. All these fancy games with scoring zones, wide man etc.. yeah they can be useful but at the end of the day they'll have to play a normal game. 2 touch football is great at underage as it doesnt allow one to dominate but when it gets to older age groups it just doesnt work. At u16 level and up they should have a fair idea of space awarness etc.

The hard work is done at u12, u10 and u8 level.. Get the foundation right and your players will just bloom after that......

I was at a Blitz, Perhaps the same one but In fairness this condition was only placed on the game for a matter of minutes, And I feel its was a fun element also. It was a Blitz Not a coaching session, In my opinion there is no harm in conditions like that being applied to a game.

I think it's a very good idea to get boys kicking with their "standing" foot. at the age of 8 they should certainly have grasped the idea of kicking. so it is a good time to start practising with the weaker foot. time and again we see players at senior level either coming inside or going out wide to get on their strong foot thereby either slowing down the move so that there is time for the defenders to get back or possible narrowing the angle. it is extremly important to be able to kick with both feet especially in the forward line. The sooner the lads start practising it the better IMO.

s goldrick i have to agree with you. On our club senior team there is only one player that can use both feet. I myself have been kicking with my weak foot since under 14 and can't understand how 25 year olds still can't do it. It annoys me every time a senior player will have chance at shot but must turn back in to kick and give defenders times to tackle.

Children at 8 years old should be trying to kick right... toes pointed, kick from the laces, straight line kicks etc etc When they hit 10 yeah maybe weak foot.. They'll have at least another 10 years to practice weak foot and sure even if you do 10 minutes drill and one half in a game at training sessions on weak foot at u12; by the end of the year they'll definetly have grasped it.

agree with redboots15. all the best forwards can score with either foot. the brogans, gooch, etc. remember Larry Reilly's great point on the run with his right foot after a great solo with his left in the '97 ulster final . It definitely gets you an extra 2 or 3 points every game. the great Maurice Fitzgerald could take frees equally as well with either foot. (and usually score)

yea _footie_boy_ I see down are in the all ireland semi which would be fully expected considering they bet the best team in the country in the first round of ulster. I know I said they were average but beating cavan obviously gave them a serious boost. And ye bet them in the league, thats irrelevant sure longford bet them in a challenge.

the same thing said every year about the county minors..that its meant to be a great team.?maybe if everyone quit looking at the names on paper and go see them play and then say maybe?,at the end of the day,,its all on the day of the match,,and i know!!,and luck just never seems to be with us.

I saw quiet a lot of underage matches over the years, Down in the championship were better than there one point win over Cavan truth to be told, However the draw in Breffni in the league was a different story I think it ended 10 point each
