Laois senior football kingpins Portarlington have appointed Ronan Sweeney as their new manager.

The former Moorefield and Kildare star takes over from Pat Roe, who stepped down after delivering back-to-back Laois SFC titles during his time at the helm. Under The Heath clubman, Portarlington also racked up wins over Old Leighlin and Naomh Máirtin in last year’s Leinster club SFC before suffering an eight-point defeat to Athy at the semi-final stage.

The McCann Park outfit have contested six of the last seven Jack Delaney Cup deciders, winning five.

"We are delighted to announce that Ronan (Roly) Sweeney will be the new Portarlington senior football manager,” Portarlington GAA said in a statement.

"With a distinguished inter-county playing career and years of coaching experience at both club and county level behind him, Ronan brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the role.

"The club would also like to sincerely thank the outgoing manager Pat Roe and his management team for their exceptional work over the last two seasons.”

Sweeney was an outstanding midfielder during his 14 seasons with Kildare between 2000 and 2013, winning a Leinster SFC medal in 2000 after a replay victory over Dublin. He also enjoyed a hugely successful club career with Moorefield which yielded nine Kildare SFC titles as well as two Leinster club SFC medals in 2006 and 2017.
