Kerry are Munster senior football champions for the fourth year running after handing Clare a 0-23 to 1-13 defeat at Cusack Park, Ennis.

Sean O’Shea led the way in the scoring stakes with 0-9 over the 70 minutes as the Kingdom picked up their 85th provincial crown at the Clare venue.

After seeing an early goal chance for Joe O’Connor squandered, the holders settled in via the points of O’Shea, Tony Brosnan and Paudie Clifford before eventually moving towards a 0-10 to 0-7 half-time lead.

Ciaran Downes’s free made sure Clare would only be a score off the favourites come the break, but Jack O’Connor’s side got motoring again after the change of ends via David Clifford, Brosnan and Jason Foley to help open up a seven-point gap.

After slipping nine behind, the Banner men ensured to stay in the fight thanks to Daniel Walsh’s point being backed up by an Ikem Ugweru goal with seven minutes remaining. Ugweru’s strike had come off the back of some superb individual work that saw the wing back boring through before hitting the deck and getting to his feet again to roll the ball to Shane Murphy’s net.

Kerry responded with David Clifford earning a free in front of goal for O’Shea to tap over ahead of the latter grabbing one from play and sub Paul Geaney rounding off their tally.

O’Connor’s charges now enter into Group 4 of the Sam Maguire Cup race with the runners up in Leinster, Monaghan and Meath, while Mark Fitzgerald’s Clare side are in with the Ulster champions, Tyrone and Cork in Group 3.
