Galway United will play Finn Harps in a charity soccer friendly match at the Ballinderreen HC grounds today to mark the 30th anniversary of the Tribesmen's historic European Cup winners' tie against Danish outfit Odense BK that took place at the same venue.

It was during the 1990-91 season when Galway United last qualified for the European stage after pulling off a shock 1-0 victory over Shamrock Rovers in the FAI Cup final. United were drawn to face the experienced Danish champions at home in the first leg, but with their own grounds at Terryland Park deemed unsuitable, Ballinderreen was sought as an alternative venue.

The home of All-Ireland winners Noel Lane and Joe McDonagh, future President of the GAA, welcomed their soccer counterparts with open arms as 4,750 supporters flocked through the gates. But unfortunately for the Tribesmen, they were beaten 0-3 by the Danes.

Tickets for the friendly match are €10 and proceeds will go towards a fundraiser for local man Keith William Carr who has been diagnosed with a brain tumour.
