Donegal brushed aside Cavan with an emphatic 3-26 to 1-13 win at Kingspan Breffni this afternoon to get their All-Ireland SFC campaign firmly back on track.

Finnbarr Roarty’s goal right on the stroke of half-time propelled the Ulster champions to a 19-point victory, with their Breffni counterparts having hung with them for most of the opening period in Cavan Town.

The visitors got out to an early 0-5 to 0-2 lead prior to Brían O’Connell sending the ball to their net on the quarter hour mark much to the delight of the home crowd.

Caolan McGolgan and Michael Murphy pushed Donegal ahead again with a point each, but Cavan responded with scores from Cormac O’Reilly and Dara McVeety to level it up again come the 22nd minute, and Murphy and Cian Madden would exchange frees over the next three minutes.

Jim McGuinness’s men finished the half in better fashion however, moving ahead by four before Roarty finished off a break forward for the umpire’s green flag after the hooter had sounded.

Madden and McVeety trimmed the Blues’ deficit to five within seven minutes of the resumption, but Donegal well and truly took over after that as they stretched their lead out 11 points prior to Conor O’Donnell lashing in their second goal in the 61st minute.

Oisin Gallen (2) and Ryan McHugh shot over points and McGolgan netted the Tir Chonaill men’s third goal late on as they bounced back from their opening round loss to Tyrone in impressive fashion.
