Mayo secretary Dermot Butler has hit out after Eoghan McLaughlin sustained a double jaw fracture following his collision with Dublin's John Small in this year's All-Ireland SFC semi-final.

McLaughlin missed the All-Ireland final after the second half challenge which Butler describes as "terrible" in his report to Sunday's county convention at the Connacht Centre of Excellence Dome in Bekan. The GAA administrator is highly critical of referee Conor Lane and linesman Maurice Deegan for not sending off Small.

“Players should be protected from this type of behaviour,” he writes.

“How the referee didn’t issue Small with a straight red card is baffling. How his sideline official Maurice Deegan didn’t advise him on the seriousness of the tackle is also beyond belief.”

Meanwhile, Mayo GAA is reporting a surplus of €602,729 for 2021, despite the costs associated with playing in two All-Ireland SFC finals since last December. Income was up from just over €2.1 million to just under €2.9 million thanks largely to a jump in commercial income, which increased from €542,947 in 2020 to €886,875 this year.
