Antrim open Tailteann Cup campaign with win over Tipp as Carlow deny Laois late on

Antrim got their Tailteann Cup campaign off to a winning start by handing Tipperary a 4-12 to 2-13 defeat at Corrigan Park this afternoon.

Andy McEntee’s side hit two goals in two minutes through Kavan Keenan and Eunan Walsh to take control of this encounter early on as they went on run up an eight-point lead.

Conor Sweeney grabbed a couple of points for Tipp ahead of skipper Paudie Feehan ratting the hosts’ net and by half-time the scoreboard would read 2-7 to 1-7.

Less than a minute into the restart and the Saffron had their third goal thanks to a palmed effort from Ruairi McCann and, despite Sweeney netting a penalty for Tipp, the Glensmen would ensure the victory with another McCann major and a brace of points from Dominic McEnhill in the game’s later stages.

In Portlaoise, Carlow staged a dramatic late comeback to snatch a 2-17 to 2-17 draw against neighbours Laois.

After Mark Barry netted a pair of goals (one a penalty) for the opening 25 minutes, the O’Moore men looked to be cruising in this one as the led by eight points at one stage and held a 2-9 to 0-8 advantage at the half.

Carlow stayed in the fight however, getting points from Darragh Foley, Conor Doyle and Eric Molloy ahead of an Aaron Amond goal in the 69th minute which made it a three-point game heading into injury-time.

Laois looked to have done enough but another Amond goal from the penalty spot in the fifth added minute denied them both points as the Barrowsiders came away from the derby with a share of the spoils.
