Dublin Discussions - Sensible Or Crackpot? - 7 Like(s)

Replying To arock:  "I'd love to debate this, but unfortunately for you all it is not going to happen, not now not ever and I would put my house on it. The only way something like it could ever happen would be if you ended the inter-county system altogether and just formed 14 professional teams. But not ever is it going to happen, should it happen just one good reason why a Dub should wear a different shirt and call the team something it is not, just to keep a few begrudging losers from outside the capitol happy!!"
You are correct arock. Splitting Dublin makes no sense. It is up to the other counties to get their act together, and compete with Dublin.

The Documentary- "Players Of The Faithful County" - 6 Like(s)
I might be biased, but I really enjoyed last night's documentary. It was great to see those heroes of 1982 again, and relive that brilliant game. It took me back to an era, when Kerry stood on the brink of history, 5 in a row, and they were denied that achievement in dramatic fashion, by a never say die spirit shown by the Offaly team. One thing that I recall is Eugene McGee, basing his game plan on denying Kerry goals. It worked on the day, helped by Seamus Darby's late goal, and a second half penalty save by Martin Furlong. Kerry had put 4 goals past Offaly in 1980, 1 goal in 1981, and none in the following year. That was a very good Kerry team, great players like Mikey Sheehy, the late John Egan, (very underrated, in a team of greats), add in Jack O'Shea, and Eoin Liston, so Offaly's win was a great achievement. Offaly had lived in Dublin's shadow, before the 1980 final win. Then it was Kerry, nothing easy. Offaly owed a lot of thanks to the late John Dowling Co. Secretary, and Fr. Sean Heaney, Co. Chairman in those years. Remarkably, Offaly would only win one more Leinster title in 1997, as we fell off the radar. I think the decline of traditional industries like BNM, ESB, were a factor, but not the whole story. Offaly drew players from clubs like Ferbane, Rhode, Walsh Island, all in areas with a lot of employment in those industries. Thanks RTE, for the programme, and the players involved,it is something we will always treasure in these barren years, and we dare to hope again, for our day in the sun. As Paul Rouse, said, all empires, military, political and sporting, come to an end eventually. Sorry for going on on this topic, but it was our 300 Spartans moment. Best wishes to all for 2019.

Replying To Saynothing:  "Theresa May had a better deal on the table for DUP but they couldn't see it because of their blindness for the Union. They helped the conservative's bully Theresa May and were running about full of themselves because they had the vote that counted. How things have changed. DUP and Conservative's both beaten dockets. Protocol seems like an excuse because Sinn Fein have first minister."
The DUP don't want a Catholic/ Nationalist as First Minister. The protocol is just a ruse, it helps NI business, but Donaldson can't see it. They were against the Good Friday agreement, now are in favour apparently. The Unionists are in a minority nationally, and the Tories are heading for election defeat. Good enough for the lot of them.

Maybe Dublin are just better. Is it not up to the other Leinster counties to improve their standards, and compete with Dublin.

Tyrone Boycott Of RTE - 5 Like(s)

Replying To ulsterrules:  "If Tyrone win sky will have interviews with anyone they want from Tyrone. If offaly ever become an interest to rte and they get treated the same way as Tyrone and Mikey harte has been then I'm sure you will change your tune . Your not called biffo's for no reason . Until then I hope Tyrone stick with it. Amatuer sports people do not deserve any stick when rte are making money off these boys backs"
For your information Ulsterrules, this is a forum where we can all express our opinions, including you. We do not have to agree with each other, part of the interest is the differing opinions expressed. It is implied that responses are articulate, intelligent and devoid of personal attacks. You should try it sometime. Donegal is a fine county with the finest of people, with an odd exception. Offaly will always be of interest to RTE, because of our achievements in hurling and football from a small base. We were winning games when Donegal couldn't get out of Ulster, unless by bus or car. Offaly may be in a valley period at the moment, but we will keep on trying, that is why we are called The Faithful County. As regards BIFFOs, sure that means Beautiful intelligent female from Offaly, or Bright intelligent fellow from Offaly. We don't mind the title at all, sure we are a very tolerant county and have people from all over Ireland and abroad living here.

Leinster Football Championship - 5 Like(s)

Replying To ke40:  "Some effort from Offaly, played a nice brand of attacking football in contrast to Meath who at times had 13 behind the ball. Offaly had two glorious goal chances that they didn't take and some of their points were very good scores. The atmosphere in Navan seemed very nervous and the team seemed the same. Carlow up next for Meath which won't be easy either, Meath need to up the effort hugely if they think they will challenge the Dubs. As for Offaly they should get a bit of a run in qualifiers they look fit and put together well by Maughan"
It was a great display by Offaly, but u fortunately they came up short. A little more experience in the last 15 minutes, might have got us over the line. Meath looked anything but comfortable today, but they won. John Maughan could be on to something.

Replying To royaldunne:  "That's my reading in it. Said before this match on Meath forum that if Meath were 50% for this game. Would be tops. There was no need to be 100%, Heavy training in past 2 weeks and a challenge last week against Kerry. Hardly setting up to be peak at this time. Trust me I'm extremely happy with where we are at the moment, and where we will be come super 8s. Job done today against a team playing their all ire against a team with bigger fish to fry , firing on half cylinders. Hon the royal"
Meath looked very ordinary today. Game there for taking by Offaly.

Not impressed with his comments. None of his business. Having a go at the GAA, when players in the League of Ireland had to threaten strike action, to get their due wages from their clubs. Maybe he should address that real problem first, before turning his mind on a successful national sporting organisation.

Laois Have Put The Mcdonagh Cup On The Hurling Map - 4 Like(s)

Replying To legendzxix:  "Congratulations to Laois! As a supporter of a lower tier hurling county, it great to see one of our own get such a magnificent preliminary quarter-final victory. All McDonagh counties going forward can dream of emulating this Laois team of 2019."
Let me also congratulate Laois hurlers on a magnificent win today. Second time in a week to acknowledge our neighbours, but well deserved. Laois did set down a marker today, for all those counties deemed unworthy to dine at the top table by the higher ups in the GAA. It wasn't easy for Laois, playing just a week after winning the McDonagh Cup, it was reckoned Dublin would advance after a brave display by the McDonagh Cup holders, it did not happen that way. Tipperary are up next, regardless of that result Laois have served notice they won't be a push over next year in league and championship. Eddie Brennan has done a terrific job with Laois hurlers, who for many years were destined forever to walk in the shade, today they earned their place in the sun.

Replying To Cockney_Cat:  "No. It is named the Belfast Agreement and/or the Good Friday Agreement. The British government tend to call it the BA, whilst the Irish use the GFA. link https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-belfast-agreement link https://www.dfa.ie/our-role-policies/northern-ireland/the-good-friday-agreement-and-today/"
Regardless of the name, the agreement was a considerable achievement by all sides. I think the late David Trimble showed his willingness to achieve a settlement by agreeing to the new structures. The pity is the DUP are unable to show any willingness to play their part in the Executive. The ordinary people of NI are suffering because of this childish behaviour.
