Armagh and Westmeath did not manage to get into the All Ireland Quarter finals this year but still managed to get an All Star. After the year that Diarmuid Murtagh had this year in both the National League and championship I think he was very unlucky not to get an All Star. letsgetgoing (Roscommon) - Posts: 964 - 29/10/2026 10:05:18 2698833 Link 3 |

I definitely agree with your sentiment but Diarmuid had a few things running against him, the biggest is the weight attached to those who make the latter stages and add to that the amount of high quality forwards now on show with the new rules so the competition for those slots, especially the front line, is huge. No Armagh or Westmeath forward will make it into that top 6 of the pitch (as good as Conaty is) and we just didn't have anyone who did enough to get nominated for the back 6. There wasn't even room for Paudi Clifford. Disappointing to be the only provincial winner with no All Star and bet better opposition than Westmeath to win that provincial. We needed to win one of those All Ireland series games for Diarmuid to have a realistic chance unfortunately.

Couple of players that got the All Star are probably fortunate (Burns, Wallace) but I don't think we can say Diarmuid deserves to get in ahead of Daragh Beirne, Kobe McDonald or Clifford in the full forward line. Diarmuid had a great year and if we make a quarter final after winning Connaught, he probably gets in. But in general, the full forward line will usually represent the 2 teams that make the All Ireland final. If we win one of those knockout games, he gets another game in a quarter final and then his scoring numbers are even higher. Deserved the nomination but just pipped by the Kerry and Mayo full forward line which was inevitable. Rossfan93 (Roscommon) - Posts: 109 - 29/10/2026 11:20:15 2698843 Link 3 |

Have Four Roads any chance against Tooreen in The Hyde on Saturday? keeper7 (Longford) - Posts: 4109 - 29/10/2026 12:30:35 2698863 Link 0 |

Yes Armagh and Westmeath winning All Stars puts to bed once again that the view a team needs reach the All-Ireland Quarter-final at least to win one. Armagh like ourselves had two games and two defeats after winning their provincial championship. Beaten by Louth and hammered by Kerry. They had a worse Division 1 campaign than us including a loss to us. Westmeath after their Leinster success. Beat Cavan after extra-time and lost to Galway and Monaghan. League campaign didn't get out of Division 3. I agree Diarmuid very unlucky hasn't been 6 better forwards than him over the year ln eague and championship IMO. Kobe McDonald selected in the full forward line played further out he should be named instead of Scully,O Hanlon in the half forward line with Diarmuid at 15. I agree above Diarmuid Murtagh unlucky to miss out. Did those selecting the winners deem Leinster and Ulster better than Connacht this year even though Connacht had the All-Ireland winner which Roscommon beat? And that individual performance alone by Diarmuid Murtagh in MacHale Park was wordy of All Star. Drax_the_destroyer (UK) - Posts: 1005 - 29/10/2026 13:26:07 2698868 Link 0 |

" in general, the full forward line will usually represent the 2 teams that make the All Ireland final". Not the case in recent years. Last year Sam Mulroy won All Star in the full forward line. As did Oisin Gallen 2025 and Shane McGuigan in 2024 Gaa_lover (USA) - Posts: 4102 - 29/10/2026 14:18:08 2698873 Link 0 |

Yes I agree, but also Gallen and McGuigan got to a quarter and semi final. Which is the main point, we had to make a quarter final minimum for Diarmuid to be a serious contender. Mulroy was a bit of a shock but Louth winning Leinster was obviously one of the biggest moments in Leinster provincial history in the last 20 years. Murtagh didnt look like much of an all star in clones this year, when push came to shove in the 2nd half he couldny be found. That is where all stars appear.

Four Roads fell over the line twice against Oran and lost to Dominic's and then beat in the final in no small part to Dominic's finishing the game with 14 players. Maybe Oran and Dominic's have improved or get closer to Four Roads or the latter has regressed either way it will take a brave punter to not tip Tooreen to win comfortably and the odds speak for themselves in that regard with Tooreen 1/10 to win. You could say the same about Stephen O'Hanlon in Croke Park against a 14 man Louth for 62 minutes. Likewise how many of the Mayo All Star winning defenders looked like All Stars in Clones v Monaghan when 2-20 was conceded and you were without O'Hanlon due to injury. Years work than one match is where individual player awards should be decided. Drax_the_destroyer (UK) - Posts: 1005 - 30/10/2026 12:10:37 2698964 Link 3 |

I fully expected David Clifford,Daragh Beirne and Kobe McDonald to win All Stars and predicted that over on the Mayo thread however the days of set positions are long gone so Kobe especially could have been named at 10,11,13. "we had to make a quarter final minimum" Burns of Armagh didn't reach the Quarter-Final minimum. Same goes for Sam Mulroy last year and Roscommons last All Star in Enda Smith. Mulroy won it last year because his scoring stats All year was on par with Murtagh this year but Mulroy played in Division 2 instead of Division 1 and they beat Meath Laois and Kildare compared to Roscommon who had to beat Mayo in MacHale Park and Galway in Hyde Park which wasn't done since 1990. Not sure how much longer given his age will Diarmuid Murtagh be in the conversation again. Gaa_lover (USA) - Posts: 4102 - 30/10/2026 12:27:48 2698972 Link 0 |

You would think Four Roads have not improved greatly since last year. Meanwhile Tooreen hammered Ballyhaunis in a game that is usually very close. Maybe they've always done it but have heard Tooreen playing a good few challenges against Galway opposition, maybe trying to prep themselves for a tougher Galway intermediate team this year? Could be last chance for a that Four Roads team, with Aidans on the up will they start losing a few lads to football?

Looks like Division 1 for us next year will be three home games against neighbours Galway Mayo and All-Ireland runners up Kerry. The_analyser (Roscommon) - Posts: 4531 - 30/10/2026 14:04:47 2698990 Link 0 |

Four Roads have a young team and if not this year they will go hard in the next few years to win that Intermediate hurling chsp in Connacht. Aidan's on the other hand really won't be making any waves in the Intermediate championship in Roscommon for a good while. Big difference between Junior A and Intermediate omo

Murtagh scored more against Monaghan than O'Hanlon did against Louth O'Hanlon was fairly anonymous 2nd half especially when it was expected one of Monaghans form players would step and lead them past a 14 man Louth for 62 minutes. In the end Monaghan looked fairly average without Beggan in goal and away from Clones. Drax_the_destroyer (UK) - Posts: 1005 - 30/10/2026 15:07:07 2698997 Link 0 |
