Looking Towards Football 2027

Replying To legendzxix:  "I see the provincial championship draws will be on be on November 19th. One of the more sensible decisions in recent years to wait until after the county championships at least. The top 2 Munster counties from the 2026 national league are to be on opposite sides of the draw. That should be good news for potential Division 3 winners in the race for the All Ireland qualifier spots through the league route."
Bad news for Football people in most of the Munster counties though.

See an article in Irish times outlining expenditure from county teams with Donegal, Dublin and Tipperary at the top. Understand Dublin with their resources but will other counties be able to maintain this. There is a cost of living crisis and county teams seem to be stuck in middle of it.

Looking at the Ireland football championship odds, Galway are 2nd favourites at 6-1. Find this a bit baffling as wouldn't necessarily have them ahead of Roscommon, Louth or Meath who are all at 25-1.Tyrone are 3rd favourites based off their strong finish ahead of Armagh, Dublin and Donegal.

Betting odds arent exactly about how likely someone is to win. They are based on how many punters think someone is going to win.

I understand that but that means after Kerry most people think Galway are the next most likely to win the All Ireland. That is the most puzzling part to understand.

I am not so sure but seems Eamonn Fitzmaurice agrees with you. I think there are about 10 teams on a similar level. The draw, form, injury management and game management crucial to success.

Not neccessarily. Maybe there are more punters in Galway?!

You'd do well to find any punters from Galway who think we're second favourites for Sam next year. As someone mentioned above, we're in a pack with a batch of other teams. Although, Mayo were also in that pack earlier this year.

There arent 10 equal teams. If all those 10 played all the other 10, ten times each, you would see a few would win a good few games more than the rest.
If a team outside the top few teams wins Sam next year it will be down to playing football above themselves, great effort, great skill, great bottle and battle on the day, and that little bit of luck all champions need.

I disagree. There could be up to 12 teams pushing for semi final spots and who knows what could happen after that. Remember Dublin, Tyrone, Monaghan and Louth are in division 2.
Anyone can take anyone on a given day. Just don't Galway so far ahead of others as bookies have them.

I don't see Mayo folk moving on from this anytime soon.... and as the Ross man said, imagine living next door.

I think 5 books and a play have been written so far. I am just waiting for the county board to get Mel Gibson to come in and make a film about it.

A common attitude was ya wouldn't mind seeing them win but you'd be afraid you'd never hear the end of it....and how correct that fear was, we literally have not heard to the end of it, I don't know where the end of it is but I'd say we're not even half way to the middle of it :D

Well, when Roscommon fans go onto the pitch in MacHale Park holding up "Sammy Dodgers" signs after beating Mayo, or start singing "Cheerio" to Mayo fans as they leave after a defeat, you can hardly expect there not to be a bit of rubbing it in when they finally get over the line and win Sam!

Sure, it was less than six months ago that Roscommon fans were posting everywhere that they were the Kings of Connacht after winning the provincial title. That's what happens when teams win they celebrate and enjoy the bragging rights.

And rightly so, what a brilliant victory for Mayo. Keep celebrating as it was well earned

I say that in knowing how the rules of engagement work. We have no choice but to suck it up. Don't worry, we've got more than our share in the ear over the years!
