Looked at the stats just to confirm that my mind or eyesight missed all this good fast ball in? Mayo scored 1-18 from through the hands football today. A style of play they used all year. 4-1 on 2pointers was a big factor in the game. Interesting that both Jack Carney and ROD were playing for Mayo v Galway in Castlebar last summer, when Mayo lost a game they were level in with 20mins left, playing with a gale. Mayo looked shot shy on the day, and ironically the game ended on Ruane's failed 2pt attempt to draw the game. My point is, look what a change in management/mindset/personnel can do for a team in 1 year. Kobe, Beirne, McGreal, -AOS, and boom players like ROD and Carney and more just shift gears to a higher level. Mayo for Sam just won't have the same hollow ring to it going forward......and congrats to all Mayo folk on that.

The entire county will never buy in to one. Try and convince South Galway people to follow only football or North Galway to hurling and you'd have civil war. I don't think being a dual county is the problem. But Galway football has a problem, and we have to solve it. Nobody owes us anything. I don't think management is the real issue either. It may be a symptom of a wider malaise, and I've no interest in putting the boot into anyone who gives their best for this county. But I do question whether those in charge have a vision worthy of our heritage. How is Tyrone able to get its act together while we can't? Is it a lack of resources, or a lack of will? Whatever the reason, they have built something that works. Why haven't we? I support Connacht teams in every code, and I'm lucky enough to stand in the wonderful Dexcom Stadium regularly. Every time I do, I ask myself the same thing: why don't we have our own version of this? Do we in the North and West put enough heat on those at the top? Or do we stop waiting and start building something ourselves, from the ground up? I'm as liable as anyone to have a pop at our passivity on the pitch. Maybe it's just a mirror of the rest of us. I don't see a JP-style knight coming over the hill. I'm sure we'll have another tilt at an All-Ireland before this century is out. But I'd rather we stopped waiting for the stars to align, or for a maroon-and-white knight to do the work for us. I wore my collar up like Brendan Lynskey as a kid. The 1980 team photo still hangs beside the Sacred Heart at home. Still, Galway football was always the cross to bear. I'd love to see it raised back to where it belongs. I'm sure I'm not alone in that. And well done to the neighbours for getting the job done yesterday by playing football rather than the percentages. We should take inspiration from that. Gaillimh abú. Really agree. Give them the shot. Fionn would have been exactly the injection we needed against Dublin. He's the kind of player who changes the momentum of a game, he's always a goal threat and instinctively alive to every loose ball. He is the best for hoovering up rebounds around the square, and those are often the moments that decide championship matches.

Galway will always be a dual county. Football is entrenched in half of the county and hurling is maybe even more entrenched in the other half. Don't see it ever changing to any great degree. Galway have won football All-Ireland's but hurling remained number one by a long way in the hurling half of the county.
