Gaa attendances compared to the 90s

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

1990's was a great time for Leinster football championship and attendances were naturally very high because of this. Meath and Dublin rivalry was better than ever then and then Mick O' Dwyre brought great interest (and improved the standard) in Kildare football. Offaly came in and won a title in 1997. The football championship back then was much more competitive which led to higher attendances.

3 reasons:

1 The back door
2 The second chance via the qualifiers
3 An cĂșldoras

The significance of provincial championship games is irredeemably reduced.

Time to get rid of it. Cats would have been out in 2012 by the old system. Waterford-Wexford final in 2004 without it.

PS I know very few will agree with this- stupid democracy!!

Definitely the defence first tactics are why I seldom even go to my own team matches now. Back in the nineties I went even as a neutral once I had no games myself. Sweepers have destroyed football and are attempting the same in football so much that the euro soccer is certainly better to watch than the gaelic just now

Back Door has had a huge effect there is nothing like sudden death
TV For some its easier to stay at home
The national league offers quality games may have a knock on effect .
Much as it kills me to say it the inevitability factor to many one sided games has had an effect none more so than in Leinster
