Replying To beano:  "As poor as Oulart were vs Rathnure by all accounts, I fancy them to nick a win against an albeit improving Glynn, and I can't see a stagnant Ferns side beating Rathnure on the same day, so that would leave Ferns in the relegation vs Fethard. That would be too hard to call.

Does anyone know Davidstown's Oisin Hayes' pedigree as regards to underage county? Looks to me to be as good a freetaker as there is around the county at the minute, one of the areas we need looking at. Thomas O'Connor and Rhyan Whelan may be worth considering too."
I think Tomás O'Connor was in with the Senior panel over the winter, might have come on right at the end of the Walsh Cup game against Dublin

He played county football underage. Was on our county u20 football team a couple of years back. Was on UCDs Fitzgibbon panel last year.

He did. Podge Doyle was in with the u20s.

Alan Aherne writing in the paper about the very poor record of promoted teams in this year's Championship across all grades

Tbf, Davidstown have 1 point from 8 but they've a score difference of -7 so they've been unlucky rather than bad

Much the same for Ballyhogue in Junior, where they also have only one point from eight, but where their score difference is just -5.

Question though, and am asking it in general terms rather than specifically about either or both of those two clubs:

If you play four close games in a row, and don't manage to win any of them, is that really just unlucky, or it is a sign that you don't have what it takes to get over the line after you've moved up a grade?

You could say that but I would say they were very unlucky in the games they lost and were equally very lucky to get the point in their last game with Liam Mellows butchering loads of goal chances and D/C scoring a last minute goal. So it swings both ways. But if is remarkable though that no team has got a win. I suppose it shows that maybe teams don't realise there is a step everytime you move up the grades. Teams and supporters take it for granted.

What's strange about this is usually clubs get a bounce after going up. What's happening this year across the board is really really unusual.
At an individual level Podge Doyle is a huge loss for Davidstown, they just arent scoring enough without him, Fethard have been missing a load of players too, and Rathnure have had a good few injuries in their Senior panel as well, which maybe affected their second team as they havent huge numbers to start with. Not sure what the situation is as regards Ballyhogue and Marshalstown.

Rathnure's second team did not go up. Marshalstown beat them in final last year.

I've been told by a fella involved with Ballyhougue that they're down at least 4 starters from their team from last year and are starting 2 if not 3 minors on their junior team.

Its really hard to know with teams coming up, whats the churn etc but it is unusual, id say its never happened before.

The thing is with the championship structure i believe Ballyhougue and Davidstown need a win each to make the provisional quarter finals so really 1 win and its pimary job done for promoted clubs.

Maybe a structure that sees a team just needjng 1 win to stay safe isnt the best?

Every team is missing lads. Its probably a one off. Come next year and they will have 4 or 5 wins at this stage.

Yep. Things can change a huge amount just from one season to the next.

Losing four players off a County Final winning team would be significant, but I'm not sure that's actually happened?

Have just dug out the programme from their County Final last year and compared it against last weekend's programme. Of the 15 that were named to start in last year's Final, 12 were named to start last weekend, and another two were in the subs. Seems only one player has left the scene altogether.

I realise of course that the weekly programmes are not exactly a Bible in terms of how teams actually line out, but still, if lads are being named there, they must be knocking around the scene somewhere rather than being gone from it altogether.

By the way, on another note, and about your last line - think back on this year's Leinster Senior Hurling Championship, and be careful in what you say!!! :D

Dont know about Ballyhougue but most teams i know put in a starting team at the beginning of the championship and rarely change it unless a player is gone for the season. Dont know the full details but I do know that 2 minors definitely started for them

It is kinda annoying that to be fair the team programmes thing but not sure what ye can do.

True that on the whole 1 win thing!!

I dont think it works though,

Right now we are down 7 starters who started games last year, and thats on top of some of our best lads being in Australia the last couple of years.

Thats the thing. There seems to be a serious churn of players in an awful lot of clubs.

And in my own there's been an absolute spate of serious injuries mainly cruciate and its gotten worse year on year since the introduction of the split season. And we are still losing players every week to holidays and festivals etc etc.

I genuinely worry and wonder is our obsession with more and more games hindering us as a county?

I have said that here for three years and been told off. Far too many games. And especially for lack of jeporady.

Saying the same for years here aswell. Too many games, no jeopardy. Easy fix three groups of 4, top two in each group into quarters, best two third placed teams also into quarters, worst third place team and bottom three into relegation semis. I believe our minor championship is being run like that this year.

When I played it was groups of four for a while and it was a novelty to see who you'd get in the group and also every game meant something.

Current hurling championship with that amount of games is worth too much to co board though. Filling their coffers at expense of standards of hurling in the county.
