Replying To Viking66: "There were other problems with the idea. It would spell the end of the Districts and Junior B." Not necessarily. Maybe with a bit of inventiveness and a willingness by the Districts to do things differently, it could be made work all right, for example:
- Gorey & Enniscorthy Districts combine to run a 'North County' Junior B & Junior C - Wexford & New Ross Districts combine to run 'South County' Junior B & Junior C
I remember the Alley saying there's already a 'de facto' split in that District anyway, as they and Ferns are fielding their third team at Junior B, while for every other club there, it's their second team. They mentioned another club that are usually weak at that level too, even with their second team. Apparently it's generally a 'mini league' between these three for the bottom three places, while the others battle it out at the top.
You could put those three into a Junior C along with the Enniscorthy District teams that have been getting the beatings outlined above. The stronger Gorey & Enniscorthy District teams remain in Junior B and play each other there.
Wexford & New Ross could do a similar split.
You might not have even numbers between Junior B & Junior C, and you probably wouldn't even have even numbers in 'North County' & 'South County', but I don't think that'd really matter. So long as all teams were at the appropriate grade and you had a way of getting four of them through to semi-finals at the right time of year would be the main thing.

Those matches would result in some amount of walk overs. The player who is not playing adult at over minor is just a casualty of the game. You can only do so much.

Our Junior B is usually even enough in Ross District though. As is always the case in the grade in a particular week a team might not have many avaiable and could ship a beating. And we only have 5 Junior B Football teams as it is, most of the rest of the clubs 2nd teams are Junior A or Junior. We finished last in that this year, didnt win a game, but werent hammered really. We have 8 Junior B hurling teams I think, and while one or 2 might be weaker in a given year taking a 5 year average there wouldn't be any that would be far behind the others. For example we have won all our Junior B hurling games pretty well this year, after not winning any at all last year. Not sure how combining us with Wexford District would serve any purpose.

Oulart and Rathnure battled it out in Junior B a few weeks ago with Rathnure winning by a few points. It was more a who's who of past senior success and I was told there was well over 100 senior county medals on show!
Junior B has returned to the old days where it is the older players togging out - For a few years it was filled with 'just out of minor players' e.g Oylegate but due to lads going travelling etc it seems the younger players stepping up the grades and the older players coming down!

Presume this refers to the idea on the previous page for a "Special Junior", for specified players, including second-year Minors.
I don't think it'd be a runner either. In particular, any adult competition that allows Minors to play is only going to result in trouble sooner or later for that adult competition, or for Minor, or probably both.

Ah, I'm only throwing how it could work, if there was a desire to make it happen. I'm not actually arguing for it.
If there are eight teams in Ross District, you'd put two or three of them with the four teams who currently make up the "weaker" group in Wexford District. The idea of combining the districts is that neither of them would have the number of teams by themself to make it worthwhile running a separate competition at a lower grade.
Anyway, final point on this, and also something I remember the Alley pointing out - in all the other grades from Senior down to Junior 'A', there are 12 teams competing for the county title. In Junior 'B', there are usually 30-something teams. I remember them suggesting how that alone could be an argument for "evening things out".
But again, their proposal was shot down twice, so maybe no point talking about it anymore anyway!

And if you want 18 and 19-year-olds to play in it, that's exactly the time many of them have the Leaving Cert instead.

True thought of that afterwards . Just trying find a way to bridge the gap where new adult players , slightly older players not able get on clubs adult teams possiblt 18 yo minors too could help incorporate them too adult hurling at lowest level where they could be blooded or just play for fun and be capable of competing

Unfortunately, some people just make it at any level and you can't just find a hurling grade for everybody and not say "is there any ability at all here"? The only other way you could do it is 7-a-side hurling for players and say players who are playing adult can't play or along those lines but who really wants that truth be told? I knew many players over the years of every sort of ability and all but a tiny few could get a game on some team. The time for Go-games is underage. At some point, a player has to ask is playing the game a waste of time. That's not being elitist, that's not being dismissive, its just calling it as it is.

If a lad practices the basics at home, and gets himself fit, neither of which are beyond anyone, he will be well able play Junior B if he really wants to. If a lad couldn't be bothered practicing the basics until he's capable of performing them, or won't get fit enough to run around for an hour, then really he doesn't want to play hurling in the first place. Football likewise.

Some of us drove on to the 1st team and some lads just kept fit and training and weren't very good hurlers but made 2nd and 3rd teams through sheer effort. Its the same in the Aussie Rules teams, a couple of lads are resentful of the "bloody immigrants coming over here taking our places" but in Aussie Rules being fit is first and foremost but these lads don't want to do that hard training. If you want it you can get it. But then I too believe there is no point having an extra grade(s) for these players. You just can't keep everybody for the minority.

So lets see if we can make some insight into this weekends Round 5 permutations:
Senior Group A St Martins V Shels Last day out the Martins never got out of second gear against Glynn - but they didn't need to and just sauntered through the match with a good win. Their sights will be set on bigger days and starting to aim towards a county final appearance. Shels are still not firing on all cylinders as they proved the last day. Still doing enough to qualify in top 2 but I'd still expect Martins to win this one by 3-4
Harriers V Glynn Glynn were terrible the last day - unorganised and uninterested. It was as if they had their faith sealed before they left the dressing room. Alarm bells must also have rung around Wexford town with how poor the Harriers were against Rapps and the easy goals they coughed up. Once Chin was contained the rest of the players didn't know what to do. Harriers are better than that though but I think Glynn's race is run and they have been struggling for last few years. I expect Harriers to take this by a few points
Oulart V Rapps Oulart will need to start gathering some momentum or else they are going to find themselves in another relegation final. It's very difficult to turn it around when you are loosing. Rapps win last time out against Harriers may have been the injection they needed. On paper they still have the bones of a decent team and with Kevin Foley driving them on they maybe in the mix for at least a S/F place yet. Don't see Oulart having enough fire power here so will go with a Rapps win.
St Martins to finish top with Shels second. Oulart and Glynn in bottom 2
Senior Group B Rathnure V Oylegate Rathnure defo the team that the county are currently talking about - getting on with their business and surprising everyone. At the start of the year had you have told them you will make a Q/F then they may have been happy, now anything less than a semi final or a final will be considered a disappointment. Oylegate blowing hot and cold - on their day they can put it up and beat any team. However their forwards are under pressure and as a result are pushing up the Recks which is leaving the back wide open. That said Rathnure haven't beaten Oylegate for a few years and I'd expect them not to lay off the gas even thought they are guaranteed top spot. Rathnure by 4-5
Crossabeg V Ferns Battle of the bottom 2. Not sure what to say here - Crossabeg shipped a heavy defeat last day and more worryingly conceded 6 goals. Ferns had a good win against Oylegate and racked up a very high score. I think the break will have done them well and will have the few injuries back so I'd expect that to see them over the line by 4-5
St Anne's V Gorey I do see this the game of the weekend as I think Gorey are under pressure. Very lack lusture against Rathnure and also beaten by Oylegate. Won against a poor Crossabeg team but just haven't seem to put together anything yet. Anne's had been doing well but were completly outclassed against Rathnure. Regardless of the results they will finish 2nd but I am going to give it to Gorey by a few points.
Rathnure to finish top with Gorey second. Crossabeg bottom with Oylegate 5th

Rathnure to finish top with Gorey second. Crossabeg bottom with Oylegate 5th " Martins v Shels- This will be another Martins win,I think they are cruising through games to date!! I feelthey always have another gear if needed!! Shels have been poor and I think hearnes influence will be limited here so I can't see shels getting a foothold!! Amazingly Joe O'connor is out and for every other club in the country it would be a huge blow, but not the Martins, strength and depth of the panels is unreal and its a case of next man up!! Martins by what they like
Harriers v Barntown- I think this is going to be very tight!! Barntown have had opportunities to win games this year and have come up short in the last few minutes!! They lose this game and they are down the bottom 2!! Harriers have got some serious injury with Richie kehoe and colm heffernan!!! That's their full back and leader and their centre back!!!if they can win and shels get beat they go straight to q/f!! If barntown can contain chinyou would have to say they have a great chance,if not I see the harriers getting over the line by a couple of points!!!
Oulart v Rapps- i think oulart will stay up firstly, they won't win this game!! I feel the Rapps have been improving as the games go on!!! Liam ryan back and Kevin foyle in the form of his life is a breath of fresh air!! Rapps win for me!!
Rathnure v Oylegate- Rathnure have been tipping along nicely,I think they will win this one also,I feel this oylegate team is on the decline since the county final,I feel they haven't really got much of a forward unit to trouble rathnure!! I still think that q/f is probably where it ends for rathnure but they are coming with young men and I think in a couple of years they will be back near the top!!! Rathnure
Ferns v Crossabeg- ferns win this they have all players available and hurled alot better the last round!!! Crossabeg really struggling and for me they go down
Anne's V Gorey- both teams not really at their peak i think we will see both teams come up a level,The Anne's are a team that i admire because they give it regardless how they are goin and I feel when gorey are off it they go into themselves abit and can be really poor!!!il give the Anne's the nod here
