Some Updates On The Football Review

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

It is noticeable that goalkeepers, while being specialists, are not often trained specifically.

Standing a lad in goal for a training match is the least effective way of coaching a goalkeeper.

Considering all the skills needed to be a good keeper - their hour of training should involved 45mins of GK specific drills.
I find it amazing how many intercounty goalkeepers haven't mastered a range of kick out options

Knuckleball: A shot with almost zero rotation, hit with the laces to create an unpredictable, swerving, and dipping trajectory. It is difficult to master but hard for fielders to track. A good option when under the cosh at kickout time.

The "Swaz" Curled/Curving goal Kick: A common technique that uses the inside or outside of the boot to create spin, allowing the ball to bend around a pressing attacker. Often used to hit a teammate on the run - into the chest. All the runner needs is a yard of space and he is away.

Dipping Goal Kick: A shot designed to rise quickly and then rapidly descend ("dip") over the pressing attacker and into the stomach of a defender on the run, often achieved through top spin. A Stephen Cluxton Special.

Driven/Power Shot: A high-speed, direct strike aimed with maximum force, typically using the laces, often used to hit the opposition 45. Shaun Patton special

Trivela (Outside Foot): A shot hit with the outside of the boot, causing the ball to curve away from the goalkeeper. A fast disguised short kick option.

The "Ping" (Lofted/Long Ball): A high, long ball that drops onto the midfielder's head. One for the "Fear Laidir" to catch and the opposition to punch back at you.

The Short/Build-up Kick: Used to maintain possession and play out from the back.

Being able to do each of them with either foot and a shortened run up - a lot of kicks needed. Plenty to be at rather than standing waiting around. Especially when you now need to take 35-40 kick outs per match - so need to be kicking a ball every 2 mins.

In the main I am delighted to see the GAA are open to further rule changes.
The GAA were brave with the Jim Gavin's Football review. People said it was a lot of changes but with the new Football Review rules actually resulted in a game a lot more like tradational gaelic football.

The process of the Football review was very well managed. The way rules were trialled before being incorporated was really well done and gives me confidence in the GAAs ability to successfully trial and bring in positive rule changes.

Of the specific rule changes currently up for trial,
Initial thoughts

(i) 4-point goal- makes total sense.
Only problem is it might be too soon for this to pass, in the next few years when teams get better at 2 pointers teams won't try as much for 3 point goals, then it will be easy to get it passed.

(ii) 3 hand passing limit- definitely worth trialling, it would be great to get more kicking back into the game. Maybe it is too ambitious (I can think of scenarios where it could lead to strange situations) but on the other hand maybe teams will start playing the game differently because of this rule changes and it won't be as much of an issue.
Maybe a trial of only allowing hand passes with closed fist would have been another option.

(iii) Banning hand-pass points- seems like a good move, not much skill in hand passing points.

(iv) Proposed kickout rule changes- seems wrong way to go, looks like going back on successful Football Review changes. But see how it progresses in trials.

(v) Back court rule- again not sure should this be a priority, games already seems fairly end to end under Football Review changes.

One change I'd love to see is the GAA finally properly define a tackle- game is good now but maybe refereed to much in favour of forwards over backs when it comes to tackling.

I'd agree with you on some of these

(i) 4-point goal- I agree with this one and should be passed immediately

(ii) 3 hand passing limit- worth trialing but I expect this to be difficult to manage in reality; there are already plenty of examples of a double hop not getting caught; and the steps rule is frequently ignored. Also I don't think the hand pass is a problem on its own; its the possession first, going nowhere lateral nature of handpassing that is a problem. Mayo's goal v Kerry came after 7 hand passes moving it the full length of the pitch - I'm not sure we'd be better off if this type of goal wasn't allowed.

(iii) Banning hand-pass points- I don't fully agree here. Yes - not much skill in punching it over the bar; but there is skill in a team working it close enough to have a very simple score. A four point goal should make it a better option to go for goal close in. No need to bring this one in.

(iv) Proposed kickout rule changes- don't agree on this one but a lot of kick outs are going long and the short one is riskier; not sure theres much merit in making the short one easier again.

(v) Back court rule; I was in favour of this one before seeing how Mayo played the new rules this year. I still think its probably a good idea; give more of an incentive on teams to push out to try and win the ball back but as Mayo showed that incentive is there anyway if teams are brave enough.

All in all - I'd make a goal worth 4 points immediately; for the rest of the items I'd wait and see how the games evolves in the next few years. If we see more teams trying to go man on man the game will be in a good place. Teams doing this have done better this year - but if we get a second coming of zonal defence and avoid risk at all costs starting to come through we'll need to think more about these changes.

List of EAG ideas and my position on them:

1) No halfway backcourt - Agree
2) Three consec handpass limit - Agree
3) 40m arc to end line - Disagree (narrow club pitches)

4) Goals 4 pts - Agree
5) No fisted pts, except "in flight" - Disagree (less rhythm)
6) Black card, for aggression when opponent NOT in possession - Agree absolutely

7) Subs 5 to 6 - Agree (game more intense)
8) Kick outs to outside D, not arc - Disagree (long, better)
9) 4/3 breach free from 13m, not 20m - Disagree (20m, ok)

10) Kick out mark, illegal challenge - Disagree - free in place, no +50m, after mark + foul
11) Sideline kicks, on or behind line - Agree (less fussy)
12) Sideline two-pointer - Agree

Interesting column by Kieran Shannon in the Examiner this week - he argues that a 4-point goal might discourage one-point scores (link below)

https://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/arid-41903692.html

He says a 2/3/6 scale (or its clumsy 1/1.5/3 equivalent) might be appropriate.

In the spirit of that scale, but with the dropping of 'clumsy halves', how about 1/2/4 'with a twist':

Twist is 'three one-pointers' need to accompany each 4-pts goal (3-pts goal otherwise) - so
'two 2-pointers and a 3-pts goal' (7 pts total) has the same value as 'three 1-pointers and a 4-pts goal'.
Effectively, two 2-pointers equal three 1-pointers, without halves, but only when a goal is scored.

Separately, I'd like scores reported along traditional lines, but with 2-pointers also shown in parentheses for information purposes.
Example: 3-16(4) = four 2-pointers; so, then eight 1-pointers; latter leaving 3 goals worth 11 pts (4+4+3) for a total of 27 pts (more simply, three 4-pointers + 16 - 1).

What is the aim or goal of changing the current kickout rule?

I can only guess - maybe makes it easier against a strong wind? I'd be of the view that current contested balls beyond the arc is better.

I think everyone except this Committee agrees.

1. I do think the kick out rule needs amending - but not going back to what we had - just change it so the defending player must be outsode the arc when tge ball is kicked.
2. A "half field" rule would create a lot of problems. With out a time restriction of leave your own half, you just build slower attacks - not what we want.
3. Ban on fisted point - not without its merits, but if your in on goal and get crowded out, its a reward for getting there.
If your only option is to kick, the a defenders job is easier.
4. 4 points for a goal - needed - kicking the ball over the bar 3 times with the wind on your back is far easier than scoring 2 goals, that shpuld be reflexting in the scoring system. It would reduce the firsted points too.
5. Handpassing limit. The reality is if you have a 3 pass limit, you have to always seek out a kick pass as you first option. Its worth a trial

I think that shorter kickout could be a disaster and would undermine the very issue that eveyone wants to see reduced which is handpassing. It would inevitably be encouraging more handpassing as players wont take the risk of kicking from that area so close to goal and who could blame them. Probably too many changes on the table so soon again considering the amount players have had to adapt to already.
