This year's format is very fair. Group winners qualify for the quarter-finals. The 4th placed teams are eliminated. The middle 2 playoff for the quarter-finals. Very fair and helps provide 4 rounds of knockout. The preliminary quarter-finals set the scene for the quarter-finals. Tullamore, PUC, Galway and Ballybofey got knock out rounds last weekend. Great games for provincial grounds.

I think Derry were comfortable in their system of play & took their scores easier. As a unit impressed by Derry, we really struggled to unlock the Derry defence who were very patient & didn't give us any handy frees.

I disappeared after our boys got hammered by Clare last week. So not going to gloat. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3503 - 02/07/2023 23:17:36 2491612 Link 1 |
Now that the next level of teams like Galway, Mayo, Tyrone see the benefits of finishing top of the round robin groups it's going to be a battlefield from the off next year with some great matches . Have to admit, I like it.

Dublin-Kerry final. Monaghan are limited. Game, and have a couple of fading oldies, and have great spirit and will do their best (which is more than you could say about Tyrone, who are in dire need of an urgent change of management, just as they have been for the last 18 months, if co board could summon up the necessary ruthlessness, which is unlikely, given that they persisted with Harte for 5 years after it was obvious he could no longer deliver), but it will not even be close. points50swiththeargyllsonthewrongfeet (Tyrone) - Posts: 291 - 03/07/2023 01:00:28 2491623 Link 3 |
Whats that you were saying about Dublin and Kerry?

Agree with most of what you say. But wouldn't be putting Mayo in the same bracket as Kerry and Dublin when it comes to talent. The reason they've been competitive with Kerry and Dublin over the years is their incredible athletes; lack of natural forwards has cost them more All Ireland's that I can count on one hand. drumalee11 (USA) - Posts: 351 - 03/07/2023 09:25:06 2491653 Link 0 |
Yeah gloating is poor form. Nearly as bad as making false accusations and then not bothering to withdraw them, If you care to check I never used to word "embarrassing" to describe our hurlers defeat at the hands of Clare. That was realdub- not me. If you're going to be a smart a*** check your facts first. avonali (Dublin) - Posts: 1990 - 03/07/2023 09:38:27 2491658 Link 3 |
Has there ever been 4 quarter finals as poor? Armagh and Monaghan match the best of them and it wasn't down to the quality. countyman2022 (Wexford) - Posts: 788 - 03/07/2023 09:39:16 2491660 Link 0 |
Derry will be competitive but the problem is their system is ten years too late. Kerry won't get caught by this system again, in fact part of their management team is in place for that very reason. It isn't Derry or Monaghan's fault, both deserve respect for getting into an All Ireland Semi Final. They won't be competitive semi finals though, which is likely to be shown by the attendance and lack of neutral interest. Most people have already moved onto talking about potentially one of the best finals ever. I'm not it's good for the championship overall having two so far ahead. sam1884 (UK) - Posts: 999 - 03/07/2023 09:52:58 2491670 Link 0 |

Maybe if Wexford got into them it would have been better.

So after both Kerry and Dublin both had a training day out at the weekend, no disrespect to either Mayo or Tyrone but they made Dublin and Kerry look exceptionally good .. Monaghan will certainly not fear the dubs and will leave all on the field on sat wk and so will Derry against Kerry . Maybe it will be a Dublin Kerry Final but they are one game from the final as is Monaghan and Derry

Croke Park and the media potentially getting what they always wanted, a Dublin v Kerry final. It's all they really care about. Monaghan and Derry have decent players but not enough to challenge these 2. We'll be subjected to weeks of the same old boring, backslapping yarrahh yarrahh from oul Dublin/Kerry boyos from the 70s which we've heard 100 times before. It is levelled at Derry that the system us outdated yet we are back to back Ulster champions and in the semi-finals of the Sam Maguire for the second year running. I think Derry deserve a more respect. I fully expect Kerry to give Derry that respect though. Derry's issue is that we just don't have enough firepower after Shane McGuigan. Ciaran McFaul at his best can offer something and Ethan Doherty is quality but against Kerry it will be very difficult of they nullify McGuigan. There is no better man marker in the game than Chrissy McKaigue but he will have to be at his absolute top notch best to contain David Clifford in any way if Clifford is on it. That should be a good tussle though. Jazzyjeff (Derry) - Posts: 212 - 03/07/2023 10:56:05 2491714 Link 0 |

Insufficient tradition? Sure Tyrone won in 03 with close to zero tradition. Derry have more tradition now than Tyrone did in 2003. If Derry come up short I don't think it will be anything to do with belief but maybe more about limited squad depth and a system which lacks a Plan B.

It probably would. Wouldn't be watching the Northern teams off the ball antics either then though.
