Can Kerry only play Monaghan or Tyrone??met Mayo and cork in group.. CTGAA10 (Limerick) - Posts: 2511 - 25/06/2023 19:14:58 2489238 Link 0 |
Any hope of abandoning the provincial championship? Whatever about hurling, the football provincial championship has lost all relevance. The Munster hurling championship is a money spinner for GAA, and for that reason will be continued. In football, no such benefit! Ryanteam (Cork) - Posts: 532 - 25/06/2023 19:18:05 2489241 Link 0 |
Great win for Mayo.. congratulations jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20763 - 25/06/2023 19:25:00 2489243 Link 1 |
Someone doesn't seem to have gotten over 1983, but he's not in Galway. The 1983 cry babies are are collecting their pensions now. A loss to Mayo in a knockout game definitely hurts. Why wouldn't it? There'd be something wrong with a supporter if it didn't. I'll wish them the best though and hope they go on to win it. They deserve at least one and Connacht football needs it. That's my understanding. Derry v Mayo, Tyrone or Cork Dublin v Mayo, Tyrone, Monaghan or Cork Kerry v Tyrone or Monaghan Armagh v Mayo, Monaghan or Cork. Kerry's group has seen 3 qualify for the quarter-finals. None of Dublin's group opponents have made the quarter-finals. The third placed teams in Derry's and Armagh's groups have qualified. Cork are the only group runner-up to get through the preliminary round. The preliminary round was dangerous and best avoided by those who won their groups. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8790 - 25/06/2023 19:53:25 2489267 Link 0 |
So they cannot be drawn in the quarter-finals! Kerry can only draw Monaghan or Tyrone tomorrow morning.

I think that's now correct as "repeat pairings from Round One" can, in fact, be avoided. The only other possible pairing (apart from Kerry v Cork or Mayo) from Round One - Armagh v Tyrone - can also be avoided. Aibrean (Kerry) - Posts: 335 - 25/06/2023 19:56:56 2489270 Link 0 |
Sorry typo: Clare v Kerry

I agree, carelessness of a few of our lads losing possession and the ball being blocked, etc., certainly helped Mayo to progress. Lessons to be learned for the future. I wish Mayo well but I'm not convinced that they have the ability to succeed this year as things will no doubt get tougher from here on.

Keep the provincial. But have them completely separate to All Ireland / Tailteann. No affect on seedings. They're still a money spinner for provincial councils and bragging rights still mean something to supporters. Could stretch out league, no league finals, run provincials in gap weeks and leave a few rounds of the league to run close to the championship. Might make for good games as teams look to improve seedings at end of league and avoid staggered championship starts because of different number of counties per province.

I don't have much sympathy for Galway fans as they are going to have a day out at the hurling semi final anyway. PattyONeill (Derry) - Posts: 263 - 25/06/2023 21:53:53 2489312 Link 0 |
Other possible avoidable, I think, pairing is Derry v Monaghan.

I guess you are thinking about the county that are also in the All Ireland Minor Final.

Yes, ultimately that was the position but only because "the avoidance of repeat provincial final pairings and where possible repeat pairings from Round One" became possible. Nowhere was it written in stone that Cork and Kerry could not meet. Aibrean (Kerry) - Posts: 335 - 26/06/2023 09:42:15 2489383 Link 0 |
Some very tasty fixtures coming up. Surely Dublin v Mayo will be held responsible on Sunday to give Mayo another days recovery. I really fear Mayo. Dublin backs could be badly exposed here. avonali (Dublin) - Posts: 1991 - 26/06/2023 10:01:57 2489398 Link 1 |
A repeat of three All-Ireland final pairings and an Ulster derby. All teams have been well road tested. No excuses from any of us.

Same here. Our FB line in particular is very shaky. If Mayo's forwards click we'll be in trouble. Farrell's man to man tactics back there are very dodgy. Having said that, we've a decent arsenal up front ourselves. Even enough game that could go either way.
