I live not too far from Citywest IPAS hub. The local residents were trying hard to get more patrols and more security in the Hub. Mainly to protect the local village people. They also tried to stop the purchase of Citywest by the government. No one really listened. Now we see the issues. Hard to see a peaceful resolution. galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2675 - 23/10/2025 19:12:27 2641301 Link 1 |

For those advocating a 32 county what actual benefits will it bring? Will the addition of the 6 counties add so much to exchequer or will it just make services provided be more stretched than they are already KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3839 - 23/10/2025 21:06:09 2641308 Link 0 |

Nobody knows how posting regulations work because forum rules are so vague. the house rules are vague and open ended with no rules unlike many other sites. you also dont get told why a post of yours isnt approved to be posted on the site. which would help people get more posts online.

Ireland will be a bigger internal market. Agriculture is good in N.I. Also fishing. Other countries want larger states, Trump has eyed up Canada, and Greenland. Israel eyes up Gaza and West bank. Spain wants Gibraltar, China wants Taiwan and Argentina wants Falklands back.

Trump has levelled the entire west wing of the White House to make room for his "Big Beautiful ballroom" with no due process for planning or by the historic buildings preservation board. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11804 - 23/10/2025 22:37:27 2641318 Link 1 |

Thats the thing, countries have traditionally wanted to expand because it usually meant more economic activity and prosperity. There's a segment in Ireland that seem to be afraid of getting bigger by 1 million tax paying workers. It's not like we would be taking over a country where no one works, or a version of our own state in 1920 or even communist East Germany where there was no private enterprise and a completely alien economic system had to be converted over to that of West Germany. The north might not be as prosperous as here, it still has a good standard of living, good businesses which can improve further, a well educated work force, a good university system. It's not like it's north Korea.

You can not seriously be comparing a United Ireland to Israel stealing land and Trump wanting to annex Canada and Greenland.

Tourism good in the 6 counties too, and they still are massive players in aerospace technology. There's still a decent industrial base in Belfast.

It's a free forum. There's no rules on how many usernames that people can post under. Basic cop on says it's one per person. Admins are a bit like referees. Some let a bit go because it leads to a better discussion if it's not offending anyone or going to get them in legal bother.

The one and only reason I would like to see a united Ireland is because we were a 32 county Ireland, reduced to 26 forceably and without our concent, if reunification is agreeable to all then it can and will work. supersub15 (Carlow) - Posts: 3284 - 24/10/2025 11:01:54 2641358 Link 0 |

Just take a look at all island sports. Ireland is a world leader in GAA, Rugby, Golf, horse racing. All are all island sports. We are not too good at football which is split in two. The larger internal Irish market will add value. That said, I would be careful. Ireland has always been divided. Long before the 6 counties was the Pale, and before that the Viking ports. South County Wexford was the original pale. If we are ever united we can expect probably to have some American/French/Nato bases on the island. A bit like the old Viking ports of the 9th centuries. galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2675 - 24/10/2025 12:14:22 2641370 Link 0 |

To the best of my knowledge the population of Northern Ireland is in the region of 1.93 million and they receive an annual subsidy (subvention) of around 10 BILLION each year from the British Government. That works out around 5,182 sterling per adult and child, or over 20,000 sterling for each family of 4. (Estimated figures) While some limited industries might be doing ok, a lot of improvement is needed in many areas including the public service. Our economy is booming in comparison to Northern Ireland as can be seen (for example) from the number of Northern Ireland tradesmen crossing the border every day. As the Irish Tax Institute estimate that 33% of the Republic of Ireland PAYE workers do not pay any income tax, I think it might be a while before we might have a border poll, as we all know who would be picking up the bill. letsgetgoing (Roscommon) - Posts: 809 - 24/10/2025 13:03:06 2641377 Link 0 |

When did Ireland become a world leader in rugby? The worldwide GAA competition isn't great.

This must be a weird day for Jim Gavin if he goes out to vote, seeing his name on the Presidential ballot paper in an election he has withdrawn from. Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 3512 - 24/10/2025 13:21:28 2641384 Link 1 |

Trump and some donors are paying for it. No cost to the taxpayers. I'm sure you were just as vocal when Obama built a basketball court in the White House at taxpayer expense. It's not sad to see but you seem sad. Cheer up.

Fair play to all those citizens in the republic who in the event of a border poll will set aside personal financial pain to correct a great historical wrong.
