if this is to be the end of an era for monaghon its been unbelievable, i would get hard to see them survive this year but they really need to make sure they stay in div 2 then, if monaghon fall into div 3 it will be tough to ever replicate the previous 22 years. there an inspiration of a county though. dickie10 (UK) - Posts: 908 - 26/01/2026 13:47:15 2653329 Link 0 |

That was right on the money. it was literally men against boys. The conditioning difference between the teams was immense. I was actually worried for some of the Monaghan players. Armagh galloped up and down the pitch at their ease. If they'd got out of third gear it could have been a total massacre. Monaghan's general play was slow and weak. Giving up the Armagh kickout in the second half looked like a Banty type of tactic. i.e. one that doesn't work. Playing with the wind and not pressing is asking for trouble. Also Mooney was back beside the Monaghan goal on at least one occasion. I thought with the new rules it would be easier to keep him up the field. Gary Mohan looked knackered from the start. Wood, O'Hanlon, and O'Toole did as well as could reasonably be expected under the circumstances. Bannigan was OK too. Dessie Ward looked like he knew the game was up early and was going to try shooting from anywhere. I think Karl Gallagher is more of a half-forward/extra midfielder than a straight out 8 or 9. I know some were critical of McCarville at points last year but you can see the difference when he is not available.Eddie Walsh did well in his brief cameo, same as the McKenna cup final. He might deserve a start next time. Monaghan were also very poor on the breaking ball. I know the injuries are terrible but that should be an eye opener for all. If that team takes the field again I'd be seriously worried they'd ship another serious beating. They badly need an enforcer. Someone to lay down a physical challenge when the opposition are rampaging and put a fair big hit on someone without getting sent off. They need to dig one up from somewhere. I felt against Donegal last year that if Monaghan had that type of player they might have stemmed the Donegal tide. Maybe it's not all bad, there are players to come back into the team so maybe it'll come together and I suppose we'll know more after the next game. But it was a it of a shocker. You have far too many good young players on the team and coming through and strong at club level to fall to Division 3 anytime soon.

It's not a great sign of our senior team when people are mentioning under 20s who should be starting farneygael3 (Monaghan) - Posts: 509 - 26/01/2026 17:03:08 2653403 Link 0 |

McPhilips is a big physical lad but was left on bench for entirety of that quarter final even through he made an impact when he came on in Clones v same opposition. That was always monaghans calling card last 20 years win lose or draw youd know you were in a game when ya played us. None of that yesterday and thats the worrying thing not the result which we all expected really. Andrew Woods to be fair tried his best to mix it out the field but at times was jumping with two or three armagh lads. Think Roscommon will beat us in the Hyde but we may rise to the occasion v Dublin under lights in croke park when the scotstown lads will be available and Gary Mohan can recharge the batteries a bit. Agree on Gallagher. Bannigan seems to think differently through.
