Replying To Iarmhisamhi:  "Picking a county team based on performances in championship and current panelist's. Relying on posts here for any intermediate and junior players but here goes

Jason Daly
Sam Smyth
Charlie Drumm
Daniel Scahill
Sam Mc Cartan
Ronan Wallace
Matthew Whitaker
Ray Connellan
Jonathan Lynam
Sami Clarke
Kevin O' Sullivan
Shane Allen
Luke Loughlin
Robbie Forde
Brandon Kelly

Lots of Downs players would be close but edged out in key positions by the likes of Connellan, Mc Cartan etc who have to be included. etc. Sami Clarke spot might be contentious but seemed to be very good in b section. Jack Duncan maybe? Kinnegad are more a sum of their parts than any real stars which hinders their progress, though Darren Giles was their best forward but is unlikely to be called up to county level again. Eoin o Brien is their most consistent player and brings a lot to defence and attack and might be worth a try. Woods good but Drumm in possession of no 3. Nigel Harte will also come into consideration but injury rules him out. Did I leave out anyone?"
1. Joe Hyland
2. Dillion Matthews
3. Charlie Drumm
4. Sam Smyth
5. Sam McCartan
6. Ciaran Nolan
7. Matthew Whitaker
8. Ray Connellan
9. Jonathan Lynam
10. Kevin O' Sullivan
11. Ronan Wallace
12. Shane Ormsby
13. Darren Giles
14. Luke Loughlin
15. Senan Baker

16. Ross Corroon
17. Daniel Scahill
18. Jack Geoghegan
19. Joe Moran
20. Darragh Lowry
21. Tadhg Baker
22. Robbie Forde
23. Brian Cooney
24. Shane Allen
25. Brandon Kelly
26. Brian Guerin

Extended panel:
David Giles
Andrew Kilmartin
Conor McCormack
Eoghan McCabe
Jack Duncan

Injured Players:
Conor Dillion
Nigel Harte

In my opinion the above is our strongest 26 within the county at the moment with 5 players on the extended panel and 2 injured players. I hope all the players above put their names forward. Our biggest problem within the county is a goal keeper. I don't think Jason Daly will go back in at his age. Hyland and Corroon the two best in the county in my opinion. Another problem we have is our midfield strength, we are not blessed with great midfielders in this county. After Ray and Johnny who else could do a job at midfield at inter county level in the county?

Feel free to let me know if you agree or disagree with the above!!!

I see o'byrne cup is back on the third of January. Good chance for McHugh to have a look at some new players. Out of interest , Are there any players from the junior grade capable of making a step up to the county panel?

Saw most of Junior championship. Decent final. Ballinagore deserving winners. Josephs got their match ups a bit wrong though not far off it. Seery from Ballinagore worth a look again though gets gassed late in games. Pity Mc Daniels is not 10 years younger. His form is excellent now but age against him. The two Mc Donnells from Josephs who made Junior team on podcast could be worth a look. Byrne from Ballyncargy not bad either. Good competition this year.

Replying To iarmhiabu:  "The Downs should make up the team 1-6, Jack Geoghegan for Joey Moran at 7. Moran was struggling in the Semi Final and Final. I believe he has a hamstring injury, Geoghegan shades it as I think he was St Loman's best player all year. Woods has been a good full back for Kinnegad, close call between him and Drumm. Midfield, I am going for Lynam and Cooney. Half forward line picks itself really, Kevin O'Sullivan, Ian Martin and Darren Giles. Luke Loughlin, Dean Egerton and Tom Tuite inside. 12 for The Downs, 2 Kinnegad and 1 St Loman's."
There is some amount of arrogance here with the Downs , all the rubbish posted about Leinster in the lead up to the county final and now fitting as many players possible into the team of the year. The Iarmhi Tv lads will have been at all the matches , there team will be the only one worth paying attention to. They had players from six different clubs on the junior team of the year.

In all fairness the downs were miles ahead of any Team this year. They won the championship winning 7 games and were not really troubled with a total winning margin of something like 60/70 points. Kinnegad in fairness gave them plenty of it but they never really looked like losing .
Of course there is players outside of the downs who deserve a mention or make the team of the year.. the Team of the year is rightly picked based on individual performances but team results and performances have to come into it & play a big part in it too, every game in the championship should come into account and not just the good ones
The downs won 7 games
Kinnegad won 4
Garrycastle won 4 ( out of group B)
Shamrocks won a total of 3 games and Lomans won a total of 2 games. The downs rightly should make up a large portion of the team of the year.
As regards Leinster I don't think too many in the downs would've been thinking Leinster when the championship was not even won. The majority of people on here bigging them up probably want them to fail in Leinster!
At the end of the day everybody will have a difference of opinion on different players mentioned for a Team of the year.

I tend to agree with you on the arrogance front. They have asked Micky Dan to wash the back of the lorry for last week in October for the next ten years. In saying that ,However, the song the team released is quite catchy and doing well on Spotify,

I think it goes like

Ten years, ten times, the champions stand tall,
The Downs! The Downs! Giving their all!
Raise a glass to the heroes, the legends we hail!
The glory of The Downs will never, ever fail!

Oh, ten in a row! Hear the crowd's mighty roar!
The Downs GAA Club have conquered the score!

A decade of dominance, a legend untold,
Their names will be carved in letters of black and gold.

From 'twenty six to ' thirty six' or however the years,
We banished our doubts and silenced our peers.

The Flanagan cup is ours to keep - we've won it again,
The greatest Westmeath team ever, forever amen! (Apart from Caulry obviously)
