You had me until Athenry! Although they are not as strong as they once were, this is a huge area and growing in population. They will be a force again on their own. The other villages absolutely should be able to put a strong combined team together for a senior championship run.

I agree they have a massive parish area and a town that is certainly growing but I think Athenry would be too arrogant to even consider supplying their best players to tog out with the other smaller Clubs for a combined North Galway regional team. Where as in East Galway all those 10+ Clubs would love to play as a combined regional team to enter the Senior Championship at the Preliminary Quarter Final Stage. katser (Galway) - Posts: 2481 - 17/08/2024 19:19:47 2565607 Link 2 |
No point including Athenry in any of this talk. They'll be up at Senior A in a couple of years. The young bunch they have coming in 3-4 years time are seriously strong. Probably only Clarinbridge or Oranmore can match them in that department. galway19 (Galway) - Posts: 798 - 17/08/2024 21:14:19 2565628 Link 1 |
Just saw some GS from Cavan state that Jarlath Burns speech this year was better than John Connolly's (It was Joe) speech in 1980. Now there were some good speeches over the years Anthony Daly comes to mind, Martin Storey also but Jarlath Burns give me a break. Connolly's speech IMHO is one of the best is any sport BostonGuy (Galway) - Posts: 133 - 19/08/2024 03:34:52 2565749 Link 2 |
Just wondering is there any up-date on the appointment of the new Senior Manager. I was hoping there would be white smoke early this week. maroonedngalway (Galway) - Posts: 9 - 19/08/2024 15:05:22 2565838 Link 1 |
I think they are back to the drawing board now that their first choice manager has taken the Republic of Ireland soccer job!!

It seems like a hard job to fill which is strange for a fairly successful hurling county, at least over the last 40 years or so. Strange. Sigh.

Anyone know if Joeseph Cooney is back for Sarsfields? Redzer99 (Waterford) - Posts: 84 - 23/08/2024 15:13:49 2566459 Link 1 |
Great double header in Athenry on Saturday. Sarsfields against Cashel is probably the game of the weekend. Ger Farragher hurling unbelievably well at the moment and has good support in the forward line from Greg Thomas. Very well coached side under Mattie Murphy. Sarsfields still down a few bodies with Darren Morrissey out and Joseph likely out as well. Kevin Cooney is a mismatch for Castlegar though and I expect him to get Sarsfields over the line. galway19 (Galway) - Posts: 798 - 23/08/2024 16:54:14 2566487 Link 1 |
Good wins for Clarenbridge and Killimordaly. Hard luck to Gort. Clarenbridge were rampant though I didn't see that match. I watched the Gort match and it was fairly close for most of it. Trump2020 (Galway) - Posts: 2269 - 23/08/2024 22:45:57 2566502 Link 0 |
The Bridge look good but another injury for Aaron Niland. Hard to tell if it was the same hamstring as last time. Came off in the first half. Hopefully not too bad. 0-15 for Evan after scoring 1-16 in their first game. galway19 (Galway) - Posts: 798 - 24/08/2024 08:20:09 2566523 Link 1 |
Gort and Moycullen in the relegation play off now

We're obsessed with individual scoring totals in Galway hurling. It's no wonder the intercounty forward line lacks teamwork, cohesion, and ball winning play makers. Every man looking to score for himself, to get the usual scoring total 'acclaim'. It's no wonder Whelan hasn't passed a ball to a colleague in about 2 seasons, and got an all-star for one of them.
