The intercounty calendar has shortened and with the new split hurling/football season for the club championship doing away with the club championship games in April there is a new window there that there hasnt been over the last 30 years?

Inter-county U20 will be starting around end of March or beginning of April. Couldn't play club U20 then unless clubs had to play without their county players. Like all these things, 90% or more of club U20 players wouldn't be affected....but there'd be uproar about the others. Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 2576 - 16/12/2021 20:25:02 2393050 Link 0 |
Why not run the intercounty u20s parallel with the intercounty senior championship? The way the rules are currently a player cant play for both anyway?

Can't see a problem with under 20 games this time of year, weather is good which is a big help luckily Lockerroomboy (Wexford) - Posts: 472 - 17/12/2021 10:29:41 2393066 Link 0 |
Seems like a good idea. But am not sure the rule is that if you play U20 inter-county, that you can't then play senior as well? I think it's that if you play senior, you can't then go back to playing U20? If so, somebody could play U20 with Wexford during April and into May, and then still be eligible for the seniors for the rest of May, June, and hopefully into July (for the All-Ireland Final!). His club wouldn't want to play the club championship without him. But as I said, am not sure. Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 2576 - 17/12/2021 11:17:17 2393074 Link 0 |
I think no matter what you do with fixtures somebody will be upset, just look at the split season, it was clearly needed but still some people are complaining about a July All Ireland. bostonredsox (Wexford) - Posts: 4368 - 17/12/2021 11:26:47 2393076 Link 1 |
That's for sure. No pleasing everyone!

Hard luck on the Shels boys, left it behind them in normal time but did football in the county proud. zinny (Wexford) - Posts: 1895 - 18/12/2021 17:27:17 2393179 Link 0 |
For sure! Well done to them they did alot better than most of us were expecting.

A great performance to be fair. But their lack of a marquee forward came back to bite them. The fact Glen Malone was their top scorer (bulk from frees) in their run to the county title sums it up. beano (Wexford) - Posts: 1451 - 18/12/2021 19:11:15 2393204 Link 0 |
I taught they did brilliant, pity they couldn't see it out in normal time, I'm not going to lie, i taught they'd get well bet pre game and delighted i was wrong on that, agree on a marquee forward, they were crying out for a Mark Rossiter, Mini Ryan, Sean Nolan type player today.

Agree, missing a shoot on sight forward however they still could have been in a Leinster final without one. Perhaps to does show that Wexford football is not as bad as we think.

Has it been decided on what way the club championship will be formatted this year? Will the football be run off first and what are the expected dates JT22 (Wexford) - Posts: 49 - 05/01/2022 10:39:32 2393636 Link 0 |
Any one know who David Murphy has helping him with the under 20 football team?? Lockerroomboy (Wexford) - Posts: 472 - 05/01/2022 12:33:46 2393656 Link 0 |
In 2021 it was Colm 'Scruff' Murphy from Ramsgrange who also managed the Martins this year, James Bolger from Cushinstown and Lee Devereux who plays for Rosslare, don't know if its the same again.

Not confirmed, but I'd be pretty confident hurling will be run off first again. I played more football than hurling in my time, but would agree that hurling should be played first, much easier to play winter football than it is winter hurling. The other reason being that, as much as a "dual county" we are, hurling comes first with Wexford County Board, always has and I don't see this changing anytime soon. Championship will commence once Wexford are knocked out of Championship, so I'm predicting first round of Hurling Champ will be sometime around the start of July (as I don't think we'll be competing in an AI Semi Final, although I hope I'm wrong). rossytilidie (Wexford) - Posts: 300 - 05/01/2022 14:34:07 2393694 Link 0 |
Think you are spot on. The only beneficiaries of playing the football 1st would be the winners of the different grades in the hurling championship when it comes to the Leinster Club championships. Although saying that players who only play football for their clubs would no doubt prefer to be playing in better weather.
