ACL & Chronic Injuries

(Oldest Posts First)

I'm not physio or a doctor. But does the rate of very serious injury including ACL seem extremely high?

Is it purely down to excessive load , S&C or luck!

County squad has four lads out now with ACLs last count. I know pitch 6 in Dunganny is developing a sinister reputation for injuries, yet its like a carpet and incredibly well maintained. So whats the common trend?

Intercounty/club player's probably playing upwards of 35-40 games depending on how deep season goes.

For me load must be a root cause.

I think it's primarily the extreme load upon players, particularly county players. It's also the nature of the game now - in the modern game you need to be fast, strong and learn to bring intensity to matches, which takes its toll overtime.

What you need is a top class S&C coaching team to keep them fully fit. Luck (or rather unluckiness) can take a part to be fair, as some things are out of their hands.

It's mounting up for us though. Coffey, Kinsella…It's getting tricky.

The difference between teams winning a Leinster title or all Ireland and not can be these type injury. Although Westmeath won Leinster without Luke Laughlin, you'd get some odds of them winning a Leinster snd him playing nearly no part

Meath have lost three players (Jack Kinlough, Ruari Kinnsella and Sean Coffey) in the past 12-18 months. We aren't the only ones though. Kerry have lost Sean O'Brien this week. Dublin lost a key midfielder during the championship. I don't believe it is down to load. It is just unfortunate and maybe the fact the game is so fast now especially at intercounty level and Senior Club football level, that is a factor. No offence, but there are not many players at Junior or even intermediate club level suffering ACL injuries, as the pace of the game is naturally not as high. Luck is a major part in this, and players are all well conditioned and are diligent with their injury prevention work. The speed of the game at the top level and the collisions that happen now in my opinion are a factor.

Meath have lost the best version of Jordan Morris due to a ACL/MCL injury too i fear. He has remarkably played through the injuries which is a credit to himself and his determination to play, but the worry is its catching up on him now. He didn't have a good championship, didn't look to be moving great.

That's definitely a possibility with Morris. We were all delighted at the time but he probably shouldn't have rushed back from such a nasty injury. He did become a huge player for us but when you're not 100% fit it takes its toll. He even said himself in his TG4 interview earlier this year that it could be a sore one after training. It might, as you suggested, be catching up to him.

That being said, apparently he came on for Kingscourt Stars at halftime against Ramor and had a monster game, apparently dragging Kingscourt out of the mud single handedly.

That makes me wonder if we should be utilizing Morris as an impact sub, maybe at halftime if we are chasing the game - similar to what Conlon was for us during the League. Maybe it wouldn't suit him, but we should give it a go and if he plays well while doing it he could earn his place back. Recently Morris has played in spurts, scoring a few points in quick succession and then going missing for the rest of the game.

Starting our best forward on the bench - a brilliant idea.

The GAA are doing some research on this. When ACL injuries do happen it seems one of the first questions from doctor or physio is 'do you have a big match coming up' and if the answer is yes then painkillers will get them through it but the injury will only get worse. As a neutral I would love to see a fit Jordan Morris in full flight bamboozling defences. Another player I love watchin Damien Comer, blighted by injuryies but would a longer rehab time have gotten him to full fitness? Has the ACL spike happened when more and more gym work, emphasis on nutrition but less game based scenarios in training? Speed and power over skills seems to be cool. Hard to fix a problem if you don't know what causes it.

not sure what doctor of physio would ask that question if the injury is a suspected or confirmed ACL injury? Players sometimes get through a certain period of time nursing a medial ligament injury, but ACL is a different story. It also very concerning how many physios / doctors allow players play on in games, when it's clear there's a suspected ACL injury. 3 minutes later they fall in a heap.

This has been an epidemic in all sports professional and amateur. The GAA are unlikely to mitigate it as the S&C is fantastic, you think back 10 or 15 years ago we have developed so much in terms of our physical preparation for teams, but it creates huge force generation and speed but it doesn't increase the size of your ligaments.
Is it the training? Most ACL injuries are on deceleration are teams training that component enough we train to create force are we training to absorb it?.

Am sure I can speak for most clubs within the county, that we all know a couple of lads who's careers have been hindered or blunted through ACL injuries.

The woman's game is blighted far more then the mens.

I'm not sure that is the case - he came back after the injury and had a good championship in 2025, won a county championship, played well in the Sigerson and had a decent league finishing 3rd top scorer in Div 2. Admittedly, he didn't reach the heights in the championship this year but I would actually put that down to fatigue after playing a lot of football and also he seemed to lose a little bit of confidence. I would be very surprised if he's not one of our top forwards next season and I think he'll be back to his best.

Oh please. He's hardly our best forward as of yet. If he plays well in training and the club championships, he has every right to start. I think we need to explore all options. Clearly our "best forward" didn't set the world alight in any of our championship games.

I would say himself and Frayne and Costello who were our three main scoring forwards last year suddenly have a bit to prove in order for them to be guaranteed starters in 2027. Costello had a bad injury this year and expect him to get back up to speed. Morris and Frayne looked fatigued physically and mentally. James Conlon and Ruairi Kinsella were Meath best performers in attack by a distance this year and unfortunately Ruairi will miss league action next year. I think it opens door and it was encouraging to see the likes of Conor Duke and Jamie Murphy scoring heavily for their clubs last weekend. Robbie Brennan and selectors need to be ruthless and pick players on form. The squad needs to be developed and its time more from recently succesful U20 teams get chances. It may just shapen up the so called regulars too.

Both perspectives could be right. I think time will tell. Either way, we need Morris to rediscover top form.

I blame Golf. They don't start playing football but the golf creeps in and it prevents the ACL from fully recovering
