I've been just thinking lately, who are the best players in the past 30 years not to play inter county? Hurling and Football

Mairtin Doran, Kildalkey.
While he did play football for the county he did not in my memory play senior hurling for Meath. Without doubt one of the best club hurlers of this or any era. Outstanding in all of Kildalkey's championship campaigns.

Paul Carey from Senchaltown. Best wing back in Meath for 5 or 6 years. Injury prone but great man when fit.

You are thinking of his older brother, Mark. He never played senior but did play U21

Without a doubt the whole Kells team from each of the last 5 seasons should have played championship football for Meath. Scandalous how theyve never fielded an all Kells Meath football team. Sure theyre the most consistent team in Meath

I'd say they might've allowed Mickey Newman in as he played schools and underage football with Round Towers.

Although which Kells player would you drop for him.

Agh i'm talking out me rear end, sorry Mickey, there's no place for you

:) :)

Did Brian Clarke of Seneschalstown ever get a shot with Meath? He was one of the best club players in the county in the late 2000s.

I think he might've got an O'Byrne cup game or two but was around at the same time as Cian Ward who was only a slightly worse free taker but better open play contributor.

I stand to be corrected but is Round Towers not Kilmainham and Drumbaragh combined underage?

We would nearly have to break it up into
-who was good but others during that era were unbelievable
- Who was Good but wouldn't of had the best application
- Who was good but didnt make it due to politics / Face didnt fit

I would put forward Cathal O'Dwyer and Trevor Dowd from Dunshaughlin - Politics
Trevor was one of the most under rated footballers in the county, superfluous skill and I assure you he was one of the main protagonists on that Great Dunshaughlin Team of the 00s

Cathal was an amazing footballer and dragged that team into an Inch of a county title v Summerhill , would of easily fitted into the Team of the Early 00s and how he didnt get a run with the county even to this day astounds and baffles me

Ciaran Macken of Senchalstown - application
a Classy footballer who could mix it and was a leading figure in that good Senchalstown Team - Would walk into the current Team , maybe didnt push himself hard enough or didnt want the commitment associated with the Meath Seniors
Id say the Same about Paddy Smyth for NOM

Joey Farrelly - Politics
The Blacks Hercules , Ive seen him hold off Senior Inter county men with one hand like they were a
Only rivalled by the Great John Mc for pure natural physical strength
Mightnt of been the most skillful but more than made up for it
Definitely better than Crawford , maybe if he lived in Dunboyne he could have a couple of All Irelands

Alan Fox - Era
A super little footballer , could run all day and lightning fast ,but had a lot more in his locker , very intelligent player and knew when to kick when to run , where to run and would put the ball in your chest . His size was the reason that he didnt get a run for the County but When you see the likes of some of the small lads playing for Meath today , he could definitely do a job

Brian Sheridan had exceptional talent but for some reason just didn't make the grade.
Peter Sullivan comes to mind too. Paul Nestor was also an excellent player.

As a young lad I can't say I've a wealth of knowledge of the club game but from as long as I've been following it I can say that there was big potential in the early/mid-00s for aggressive changes in selection.

Indeed its an open secret that in Sean's last few seasons he stuck with the players who had delivered for him in the past- the hallmarks of many managers, they reward aging and/or decorated players who didn't let him down. This was also the beginning of the era of the detatched county board.

I would argue that this left a vaccuum in selection from players in that era and there are numerous clubs who were underrepresented at the time, remember Meath was a very dominant force in the Junior and Minor inter-county grades at the time, with few of the squads filtering through to the senior team until after Boylan retired, notably Bray and Farrell. There is a wealth of talent of lads now in their 40s who didnt get their opportunity at that time. The failure to properly plan and fill the void post-Boylan was the root and beginning of our selection issues over the last 15 years.
