To answer a part of your question from what I heard the other night is that O'Sullivan is carrying a bit of a knock and didn't want to maybe make it worse by playing, now he seemingly felt ok but it was viewed not to take the risk, so all going well I'd say he will be seen v tipp, but I'd reckon not for full 70 either as starter then subbed or vice verse

I think we need to start looking more towards youth and potential for the next 5/10 years.
10 of the team picked above are all under the age of 25.

It seems that the keeper position is between Dardis and Brennan, I would be going with youth over experience as Marcus is on the wrong side of his 30s now.

The backs pick themselves at the minute no one has had a really bad game in which you would call for them to be dropped.

We still lack a quality midfielder like Nash or O Rourke, McBride is still too inexperienced while Devine is probably an option for years to come.

Up front is where I have more questions than answers. I'd have Newman in for his free taking and ability to win ball. Biggie is our best option from open play for scores. We need Brennan, McMahon, O Sullivan and Tobin all need to kick on this year! None of them have reached the heights we expect. Campion, O Reilly and Conlon are lads for the future and need game time throughout the league.
Finally I'm going with Burke at wing forward for the simple reason that he rarely wastes ball and we done that so much on Saturday, taking the shot when it wasn't on, not giving a kick pass when it was on, the basic skills required at this level!

Replying To Crinigan:  "I think that is fair to say. McEntee definitely has put together the strongest panel he has had so far in his Meath management career going into this campaign (we could do still with a POR in goals though). I'm optimistic that we'll give a good account of ourselves and if that leads to promotion or relegation or whatever - so be it. I just want the players to do themselves justice and enjoy themselves playing for Meath."
hopefully you are right. There is nothing wrong with a bit of optimism, just think its a bit early to judge.

Haha. Very good that's what I wanted to hear. However it would be good to go to a couple of matches. At least then you would have some expertise to actually talk on, and not basing it all on a couple of games from summer of 18, us older fellas prefer to actually watch the games we write about rather than talk 5hite about it without ever watching them. Just a opinion. Welcome again,

I go to as many games as I can but its difficult with work and so on. Pre-season games arent particularly vintage or appealing either. Come league time ill be at as many as possible. Im here to talk 5hite just like the rest of you are, and speculate and talk about a mutual interest, and occasionally give lip back to someone if they get too excited. Take note Royaldunne :P
In all fairness, Ill go and watch the Tipp match and see the 15 players on the day, and see how they play, then ill get back to you with the team id personally pick.

Regarding the league I am maintaining, rightly or wrongly, a positive outlook. Tipperary are beatable and I believe we will beat them and further believe McEntee will have the team fired up no end for the match, anyone who sat in Thurles last year and froze their ass off looking at one of the poorest performances of 2018 will know players should lack no incentive for this opening game. Then Donegal, minus Michael Murphy and the Gweedore contingent, in Ballybofey, a tough challenge as it was in 2014 (I think) when as complete underdogs we should have beaten them instead of coming away with a credible draw. I wouldn't rule out a result up there and getting Donegal in the early rounds could be of benefit. Armagh in Navan, always tough, and I have a sneaky feeling they could be outside contenders for promotion, but if we can match them physically and bring intensity like we showed v Tyrone, again winnable. Cork away, they show no signs of imminent improvement much to my disappointment and the loss to them in Navan last year was a real low point, in terms of points on the road this had to be a target. Kildare at home, if we are in the mix come round 5 this could be a cracking affair, Kildare have lost one of two and are welcoming one or two back, I'm not sure where exactly Kildare are at but they were a Super 8 team last year and rightly seen as promotion material but if we have something to fight for when this fixture comes round you would like to think we would give this a right good go, the last two games Clare away and Fermanagh at home are two we should be winning, we have thumped Clare home and away the past two years and Fermanagh under Rory Gallagher are very one dimensional and with Seamus Quigley off the panel are lacking a big threat. So there you are 7 out of 7, no issues and promotion assured........joking of course but if we can get a good start over Tipp and build we could, I say could, do better than some expect. Realistically a minimum of 4 points after the first 3 games is needed if we want to push the top end of the table, teams will knock points off each other in this Division, they always do, but having your destiny in your own hands be it at the top or bottom is crucial as relying on results elsewhere is a very risky business in Division 2. There's a freshness this year I like and whilst we are a long way off where we all want us to be I have a feeling we could do ok in this league, but we must be ruthless and take chances when presented, sloppiness in front of goal as presented last Saturday night won't suffice, we must take chances when presented and develop confidence, a few good results put together could do wonders for these lads and consistency is key, in fact confidence and consistency have been our downfall in recent years, address that and a big step forward will have been taken.

Good positivity there. But last year we had some awful results your right to single out Tipp away any Cork as real lows. I wasn't hardy buck like yourself for Tipp away. But I was in Navan for what was the strangest game I was ever at, no atmosphere. And a look of resignation on a lot of supporters faces. And well beaten by a poor enough Cork team.
I kinda agree with what your saying though, although I wouldn't be as positive, Our backs are playing good stuff at the moment which is a positive. I would say that's because they have not lost as many players. seems a lot of players that left panel over the past two years where forwards, the backs are more settled I would look at it roughly
Armagh Fermanagh Clare Tipperary we should win these games. I am not saying its going to be easy but we should ( hopefully we and beat Tipp with home advantage )
Cork Donegal Kildare It will be a tough ask to win theses games so we are going to need a lot luck to so.

There is a bit of freshness to the team this year its probably for the good. Not through choice as we have lost a lot players this year to. So is massive ask to get prompted this year. I dont think we will be relegated either we should do enough to stay up though.

I would put games two three and five as the pivotal ones if we to gain promotion, we have to win one and probably two of them games. As I see promotion between these 4 teams including ourselves, Now we are lucky to have 2 of them at home to what should be the other promotion contenders. Now of course been division two it's alsw possible that all four of us will be fighting to avoid relegation, ahh the joys of it :)

Replying To dunboynelad:  "I like the cut of Young_Gaels jib and indeed the 2019 recharged Crinigan.

To my eyes I think our personel is no better than the past couple of years and we are arguably weaker. We're down a lot of forwards and from what I hear it showed against Dublin. Newman back is brilliant but he's going to carry a huge amount of weight on his shoulders.

We don't have anyone in the class of Quinlivan or Sweeney, or the fielding abilities of young Kennedy that they'll have in their forwards, but ability wise we were up against a mismatch in Tyrone which leads me to some optimism. If we continue from where we left off there, and build on what I believe to be a solid defence as a decent backbone, we have every right to be at least as good with another years experience if we can kick on and dig in.

Realistically we'll be better again next year with players back and perhaps some of our youth coming through but for now I'm looking forward to a fresh slate as always and if there is one thing that Tyrone game confirmed, is it that they deserve our support."
Robert McCarthy, anytime I've seen him I always think he'd offer something different for Meath to what we have and I think him and Newman would be a complimentary 2 man ff line. Also left footed free taker I think.

I imagine you see more of him, whats your view?

I also think McCarthy would offer something to this set up even if it was off the bench for 15 minutes. Anytime I have seen him, he's caused defenders problems. However he mightn't want to commit to Meath.
Beano Hanlon and Mattimoe would also be great additions to the panel but I would be pushing for youth were possible.

1 For me beating Tipp is essential. If we dont beat Tipp our chances for promotion our dented. We need a good start. I mentioned this in the Byrne cup thread, so sorry for posting this again but I do believe it is relevant to this thread. We need to beat Tipp first game at home and beat Armagh team at home in 3rd game. We cud lose both games. But we r capable of beating both counties. If we dont win both we will not be promoted. We need at least 4 points out of 6 after first 3 game. I wouldnt be surprised we really put it up to Donegal and then we cud lose to Fermanagh. We are so inconsistent. We need a good start. We always finish well. But start poorly. This is the key a good startand we are in the driving seat. Lose and we are on the backfoot, playing catchup from the beginning.

2 We have to start the league well. We are very consitent in the league in recent years. 4 out of the 5 last years we were 1 win away from promotion. We have been contenders and we can be contenders this year. But we always seem to finish the league strongly winning our last 3 or 4 games. We always seem to start slowly. If you lose ur first game u r playing catch up from the start. So victory over Tipp is incredibly important. Here below r league starts for this whole decade. We r slow starters. The best league we had was in 2015 when we lost out to Roscommon on head to head. In that league in 2015 we started really well. Its no coincidence that is the year we got closest to promotion in 2015, was the year we started our first few games really really well, and won our first three games

A Decade of Meath league football in the Early Rounds

2010 League Meath Div 2
1st Game Won v Armagh
2nd Game lost v Down
3rd Game Won v Westmeath
4th Game lost v Tippearey

2011 League Meath Div 2
1st Game Lost v Laois
2nd Game Won v Sligo
3rd Game lost v Antrim
4th Game lost v Donegal

2012 League Meath Div 2

5th Game lost v Derry

2013 league Meath Div 3

2nd Game Won v Wicklow
3rd Game lost v Cavan

2014 League Meath Div 2
1st Game Won v Galway
2nd Game lost v Monaghan
3rd Game lost v Armagh

2015 league Meath Div 2 ( The best start of any Meath league campaign in this decade)
1st Game Won v Galway
2nd Game Won v kildare
3rd Game Won v Westmeath

2016 league Meath Div 2
1st Game Won v Armagh
2nd Game lost v Fermanagh
3rd Game lost v Cavan

2017 league Meath Div 2
1st Game lost v kildare
2nd Game Won v Derry
3rd Game lost v Down

2018 league Meath Div 2
1st Game Draw v Roscommon
2nd Game Win v Clare
3rd Game lost v Cavan
4th Game lost v Tippearey

3 We finished strongly in 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 and 2018 leagues. We can wins game back to back in the league in the later roundz. But we are poor starters.

4 We have started the league badly in first few games in the campaigns of 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2016 2017 2018. The only league campaign really started well was 2015 when we won our first three games. Thats the closest we have to got to promotion to div 1. If the GAA didnt change the rules and did take into scoring difference, not head to head we wud have being promoted , instead of Roscommon.

5 A good start is essential. If we can win game 3 or 4 games back to back at the end of the league. Why not at the start?. We lost 2 out of our first three games in the league 5 times in this decade in the years 2011 2013 2014 2016 and 2017.

6 But the most important weekend in league football is week 3. This is when the teams who are going to be promoted break into one group and the others break into relegation fight. Week 3 is a big big week in league football. In week 3 we have lost 7 times out of 9 years in this decade. We lost game 3 in the years 2011 2012 2013 2014 2016 2017 and 2018. The last year we won game 3 was 2015, the closest we got to promotion.

7 So we need to beat Tipp but we need also to beat Armagh in week 3. A good start and we have a great chance of promotion. Donegal in Ballybofey in week 2 is on paper the toughest game on paper. But we are capable of really testing Donegal and go for toe to toe with them for 70 mins and then lose to Armgh , Clare and Fermanagh. Meath v Donegal are always close games. We do up our game v the top teams eg Donegal Roscommon in 2017 , Roscommon Tyrone in 2018 and Dublin twice in the last month. Our problem is v div 2 or div 3 teams eg Tippearey Cavan Longford. If we can be more consistent v div 2 or div 3 teams this will be massive.

Your long winded post only serves to prove one thing and it's something we all know only too well - Meath are wildly unpredictable in the League. In fact, our only consistency is that we almost always stay in Division 2.

If you were to take the years you have selected there from 2010 to 2018 you will see that a number of teams that have been promoted to Division 1 played Division 3 football (Monaghan, Cavan, Westmeath, Kildare, Roscommon). These teams all in recent years were able to make the progression to Division 1. Meath were not.

I know we were unlucky on a number of occasions however those rules applied to other teams.

Meath have had their destiny in their own hands on many occasions yet for 20 years we have been the most consistent of Division 2 teams.

Until a team is breaking through and playing in the top Division it will continue to stay outside the top 8 teams and that's a fair reflection of where Meath is stuck.

Beano Hanlon and Mattimoe would also be great additions to the panel but I would be pushing for youth were possible."
37 year old sub goalie we are goin for youth alright.

The "push for promotion" isnt a proactive statement atm and only puts pressure on the team, who are as likely to sink as to swim. There's a few good games to look forward to in this league, and I agree this one is a must win if theyre serious about pushing for 1st or 2nd spot and to hit the ground running. I would back the players to perform to their best, and after that there won't be much in the scoreline at the end either way."
Im inclined to agree with RD. Andy has said that promotion is the goal (again) and the players are in this frame of mind aswell. They need to be under pressure! They are alot more focused and i know its the start of league and everyone is enthusiastic i just hope this enthusiasm isnt short lived. I predict a win from us, narrow, maybe by about 3pts, a win none the less. If we dont get this win i have a feeling team will crumble, confidence knocked after 1st game....disastrous.

Tipp have one the best full forward line on the country do if we can get grip there we b doin well. On the set up this year good to see a football coach nally involved. He might bring bit cleverness sideline cuteness to the set up. Feel McEntee loses plot to easily not concentrating on wots important game for instance. Let's hope for it anyway.
