Replying To Royal.Legend:  "You make it sound like its Dublin were playing on Sunday, of course we can beat Roscommon they got to the quarterfinals last year after just two games and then got hammered by Mayo, the previous year New York almost bet them, they lost every game in the league last year except against fellow strugglers Cavan and all the back end league games the previous year, I'm not trying to knock Roscommon but what I'm trying to say is there no better or worse then what we are at the moment, if this hame was in navan id fully expect Meath to win but with the game in the Hyde I'd have Roscommon as very slight favourites."
Agreed, but I still think we will eek out a narrow win.

Meath has been floundering in Division 2 for the guts of 2 decades.

We haven't been good enough to dominate a league.

Our away form is atrocious there's little denying that especially when we have travelled needing a result.

I'm not writing us off.. an advantage for us is that this is an opener and it always catches teams out.

If we click, we could win. But on the other hand the Rossies will be used to playing Division 1 teams - Kerry, Dublin, Mayo, Tyrone which is always worth a little something.

Hard to make a call on this game until after it I think!!"
Roscommon are no world beaters, they got well beat by all the division one teams last year except Cavan.
I've read on here that if Meath got into division one getting beatings like that would destroy a team, would that not be the same for Roscommon?

Yes Roscommon have experience playing in div 1 but they were completely out of there depth there last year, here's a few of there results in league 2017, Dublin 2-29 Roscommon 0-14, Mayo 1-19 Roscommon 0-14, Monaghan 2-17 Roscommon 1-13, Roscommon also lost to Tyrone and Kerry by 6 points, I just don't see how heavy defeats are worth something, my point is were well capable of beating Roscommon, and should be beating them if our ambition is promotion.

As for them been a class act.. hardly. We work hard under pressure hence us been a 2nd half team majority of the time playing out of our skins & leaving it til last minute to go hell for leather under severe pressure most of the time. I dont know what team u have been looking at."
There is little evidence to suggest we can win this game. But one thing is certain we won't go down without a fight. I expect a close game. Our team is slowly improving...but it's going to take more time to get to where we need to be.

We were completely out of our dept there last year because we done zero training in order to peak for championship which worked and we won a connacht title.
The year before we crashed out early after peaking for the league and finishing in the top 3.
Wouldn't read much into last year some of those defeats were a lot closer than the scoreline suggests

I don't what team YOU have been looking at. Meath a second half team? Going hell for leather in the last minute? What year do you think this is - 1991?
Last year was the first year in god knows how long that we didn't run out of steam after about 45 minutes and either give up a big lead, or get beaten out of sight in the second half. No doubt last year was an improvement, and I fully trust Andy McEntee to improve us again this year. But there are still an awful lot of supporters who are living in the past, and don't see how far we have to improve to challenge against the top teams. The same lads who insisted we were better than Kildare last year and were confident that we would beat them are now saying the same about Roscommon. Truth is that the results over the past 2 years suggest that Roscommon are at a better level than us at present, and playing at home they should be winning it. They are no world beaters certainly, but neither are we, and our away form has been terrible for as long as I can remember.
I am not trying to be negative - just realistic. Unfortunately I am working on Sunday so will miss the game, but I will be roaring at the radio until I am hoarse, and will be delighted if we get a result. I just have not seen enough to make me confident that it will happen.

Completely Agree..Some of the Meath Posters on this are some of the most deluded people I have ever came across!!
Like Bonkers...Your right it was the same stuff before Kildare last year and we all know what happened!! they just need to be more realistic and direct the passion through the correct channels

Maybe cuckoosinging I'm not having a go at the rossies, some Meath posters here are trying to make Roscommon out to be world beaters and we should be happy if we only lose by one or two, for what it's worth I think promotion is between Meath Roscommon cork and Cavan not much between them four sides

Actually put away form
Improved last year. Previous to that I agree , but let's be honest we hadn't a decent management since won

On any given day I think any side can beat anyone in the division . I agree with you Meath should be confident enough there was very little between the two sides in the last two challenge matches played between us. Although we seem to have gone well in FBD league I can safely say we did not play great considering we selected strong sides in all three games and certain players form isn't great. So I think it's all to play for. As I alluded to earlier there shouldn't be any issues with the surface of the pitch is ad good as there is around so neither team can have any complaints. May the best team win

Last year before the league started we had a number of issues. We had a break up of our the joint management and then a former U21 manager throwing his hat into the ring that delayed the process of McStay getting the outright position. All of that meant we weren't prepared right for the NFL only half of the training done compared to 2016 when we reached the Div 1 semi final and not forgetting the massive turn over of players we had which even our neighbours Mayo would struggle with. With all of those issues we still could have beaten Kerry,Donegal (they beat us with late scores) at home last year to stay up.

Now let me be honest, on paper Roscommon away is one of your hardest games you will play in Div 2 in 2018. To have ambition for promotion you need to win all of your home games and aim for 10 points minimal

I agree that our away performances improved last year, and hopefully that trend will continue. If we could just get rid of the habit of throwing in a stinker of a performance when we are starting to get some momentum, we would stand a great chance of promotion. The loss to down last year just killed us. The previous year it was Fermanagh. 2015 we threw away a lead against Laois that ultimately cost us promotion.

World Beaters?? Who exactly is saying that?

No one here is stating that Roscommon are world beaters at all so stop putting words into your own mouth.

What most rational people who believe Meath may not win are saying is that Roscommon - the current Connacht champions; all Ireland quarerfinalists; and Division 1 team for past 2 seasons should, on paper, beat a Meath team who has been eternally stuck in Div.2, has not held provincial honours since 2010*, and who can hardly buy a league win away from home.

That is before you look into our football so far this year which has seen us beat Carlow, Wicklow and Longford (pre-season) without a kick out strategy.

Also people will remember that the last time we played in Roscommon we were beaten and that head-to-result ultimately cost us promotion.

Who knows how are what Meath are going to come out with on Sunday? As I said, time will tell - such is the lottery of this Meath team.

I think the real discussion will begin after this game.

Yep that has been the downside consistents. I would also add the cork game last year as one that didn't help our cause. However we were better team v Down and still managed to get beat. But in fairness mcenetee rung the changes following that game. I think in year 2 he knows pretty much his options, be they starters or subs , so hopefully we will see a more consistent performance through the league.

Not expecting any miracles in this match. I am expecting major improvements in the areas where we were very weak against Longford......kick outs......all players taking responsibility and not afraid to shoot for a score when feasible.......captain showing leadership by example.......teamwork with determination........every player displaying maximum workrate throughout.........no excuses !!

This forum is on an eternal loop. Honestly this thread reminds me of the build up to the Kildare game 12 months.
A few individuals with delusional opinions of Meath football rooted in a bygone era who get over excited and think we can go out and beat anyone, and then a few with a realistic opinion trying to bring them back down to earth...in vain.
I'm hopeful of causing an upset but Roscommon are favourites and rightly so. Rossies by 4/5. Hope I'm wrong.

Royaldunne we really can't agree on anything ! We most certainly not were the better team v Down last year ! We were soundly beaten and deservedly so !! Your mad !

Agree cuckoosinging this game will be tight,
And not the handy 5 or 6 point win for Roscommon that some of the Meath posters doomsayers seem to think (let's hope they stay at home) who ever wins this will be set up nicely for promotion, here's to a good game at the Hyde, up the royals
