A skilled footballer in his youth, Patrick was an honorary president of St Michael's GFC at the time of his passing and was also a lifelong supporter of Meath GAA teams. The Carlanstown club formed a guard of honour at his funeral alongside the Fine Gael party. Patrick was a proud member of the party and former Taoiseach John Bruton was amongst the mourners at his funeral.
