The holders were first off the mark through a Cal Hennessy goal. Athboy responded with two green flags from the impressive Rian Shaw, but for the remainder of the opening half, Scoil Bhríde dominated proceedings. Seven unanswered points from Séamus McKeigue (3), Tom Dorrigan (2), Jonathan Hanley and Hugo Snow helped Cannistown establish a 1-7 to 2-0 lead at the interval.

Cannistown appeared to be in complete control when goals from Dorrigan and Hennessy in the opening five minutes of the second half stretched their advantage. Ronan Dullaghan responded with a crucial Athboy goal to keep his side in contention.

Holding a 3-8 to 3-3 advantage as the game entered the final seven minutes, Cannistown looked set to retain their title. However, O'Growney midfielder Dillon Shaw had other ideas. The talented playmaker transformed the contest, scoring 2-2 in the closing stages to secure a dramatic victory and a first hurling title in 25 years for the Athboy school.

After the game, David Moran presented the Zak Moran Memorial Cup to O'Growney captain Oran McGovern.
