Corn na Boinne: Moynalvey make long journey worthwhile

Moynalvey's Darren Brennan

Moynalvey made it two from two to top group A of the Gaelic Games Equipment Corn Na Boinne with this twelve point win over Meath Hill on Saturday afternoon 21st February.

Meath Hill 0-3
Moynalvey 0-15

With this game originally fixed for Moynalvey pitch which like the majority of pitches within the county unplayable, after a lot of toing and froing in the days leading up to the fixture due to the inclement weather conditions, the game was eventually given the go ahead following Meath Hill’s pitch being deemed playable following a Saturday morning inspection.

The long journey to the Monagan/Cavan/Louth border proved a successful one for Moynalvey as they emerged from the North Meath club with a deserved twelve point victory.

From referee Shane Watters’ throw in to his full time whistle it was the men in maroon who troubled the score board keeper throughout, Moynalvey holding a five point half time advantage, which was increased to a twelve point margin at full time.

First up to open the scoring was Moynalvey full forward Mark O’Sullivan with a converted free in the second minute, followed up by a brace from play by midfielder Adam Murphy, 0-3 to 0-00 with five minutes played.

Almost twelve minutes passed until the next score, the second of the O’Sullivan brothers Cillian getting in on the scoring. O’Sullivan’s point was followed three minutes later with centre back Darren Brennan pointing the first of his two points to leave it 0-5 to 0-0 with twenty one minutes played.

Home side Meath Hill eventually got off the mark with their solitary point of the first half with a Colin Breslin ’45. Moynalvey’s Vinny Walsh rounded off the first half scoring when opening his account in the 25th minute to leave the score board read 0-6 to 0-1 in favour of Moynalvey at half time.

Three points without response from Adam Murphy, Anthony Forde and Darren Brennan in the opening nine minutes of the second half extended Moynalvey’s advantage out to eight points, 0-9 to 0-1.

A pair of Meath Hill points left it treble scores, 0-9 to 0-3, on the three quarter hour mark.

Unfortunately for Meath Hill that was as good as it got scoring wise, as Moynalvey reeled off a further six points before the full time whistle, points from Adam Murphy, Michael Brady, and four from Vinny Walsh, the final play of the match a sweetly struck two point free from Walsh off the outside of the boot to leave the full time score read 0-15 to 0-3 to Moynalvey.

Although months away yet, no doubt the opening round fixture of the Intermediate Football Championship between these two sides will be a much tighter affair in August.
