Kieran McGeeney has dispelled the notion that Armagh will ease off the accelerator in their final All-Ireland SFC group match against Galway.

The All-Ireland champions are assured of top spot in Group 4 and a quarter-final spot after wins over Derry and a wasteful Dublin side who racked up 19 wides at Croke Park yesterday, but their manager insists there will be no let-up.

“You can't do that,” he stressed.

“You can't because you'll go soft. We're going to be playing, to me, one of the top three teams in it. They were beaten by a point or two by Dublin, and they drew with Derry. Galway, to me, are still one of the top three or four teams in the country.

"They'll be smarting because they know how good they are. If you go soft into that game, you could lose players and you could lose a whole lot of other things as well."

Asked if he felt Armagh are a better team than last year, McGeeney replied: “It’s like everything else. All the writing is done at the end. No matter what I say now, no matter what you say, it doesn’t make any difference. It’s always the final chapter when it comes to sport that determines the content of the book.

“You look at it from a different perspective when you’re the last man standing. In sport, unfortunately, that’s the only way it goes. I more than most would know that story all too well.”
