Tipperary hurling received a much-needed boost when second half goals from Stefan Tobin and Cillian Minogue propelled them to a 2-17 to 0-16 victory over All-Ireland champions Clare in the Munster MHC final at the TUS Gaelic Grounds last evening.
In doing so, Tipp became the first winners of the newly-presented John Doyle Cup and Munster minor champions for a 42nd time. The Premier qualify directly for the All-Ireland semi-finals, while Clare will get another chance at the quarter-final stage.
The sides were level on 0-10 apiece at half-time and on 0-14 each midway through the second half before Minogue lashed home the opening goal. Euan Murray and substitute Aaron Cagney followed up with points and suddenly there was five in it.
With the bit between their teeth, Tipp put the result beyond doubt eight minutes from the end when Tobin raised their second green flag from Jack Donelan-Houlihan’s long delivery.
