Premier Div 6: Reilly and McTigue star as Dunshughlin 3rd's win

June 11, 2022

Dunshaughlin's Martin Reilly

Dunshaughlin 2-10  Bective 2-6

Watching the last Dunshaughlin score of this game was like viewing a snippet from the 2002 version of Reeling in the Years. Two players who brought Dunshaughlin to Meath  & Leinster Senior glory twenty years ago combined to score the insurance point.  Marty Reilly and Kenny McTigue with a combined age of well over 80 years wound back the clock  with two great performances on the night.

Marty playing at 11 showed us some of his old tricks with his foot work that worked so well in the past. Kenny playing  at full back won numerous turnovers and put his body on the line to block a certain goal when the game was in the melting pot.

Bective would have been favourites to win this game but It turned out to be a very entertaining game of championship football among two evenly matched teams in ideal conditions.

The vital score came twelve minutes into the 2nd half when Seamus Doyles outstretched hand managed to get enough to palm the ball to the net, only moments earlier Bective had a goal disallowed for a throw ball and in effect that Doyle goal meant it was a six point turnaround.

Also on fire on the night for Dunshaughlin was full forward Wes Goodwin who scored 1-6 (1pen, 1f) opening with a point from play in the 2nd minute. He was hauled down himself for the penalty in the 20th which resulted in him getting a vital goal as Bective were ahead by four points at that stage.

Bective didn’t lie down and it was a ding dong battle pretty much up till the last few minutes of the game.

Dunshaughlin had good performances throughout the field with the midfield pairing Sean Gaughan and Gary Flanagan, US holiday bound James Traynor, young John Muldoon & Liam Reilly on the half back line and Paul Kean & Phadraig Clinton in the two corner back positions curbing the Bective forwards momentum. Andrew Smith looked very confident in goals and eleven of his kick outs found Dunshaughlin players.

Fran Glancy was a vital sub to be able roll on & roll off on a hot muggy evening as some had to take a break.

Other scorers for Dunshaughlin were  Gary Flanagan Luke McCarthy & Ciaran Hoary who worked hard all night. Darren Murphy worked his socks and was very unlucky not to get on the score sheet.

A well deserved win for the boys in Black and Amber, the first of our four Men’s Adult teams out over the next few days.

The make up of the management of the team could be used as a very good example for Meath GAA when appointing the new Senior management to argue for management from outside of the County, the winning management team consisted of Jim Mitchell (Cork), Paul Murphy (Dublin) Andy Byrne (Wexford) & Seamus Traynor (Monaghan). One thing it does prove, is the wonderful Melting Pot Dunshaughlin GAA really is.

The players and management of our third team wish the players and management of the second team the very best of luck against Kilmainham in the 2B Final.
