On a perfect evening for football the teams served up a very entertaining contest which ended in a draw thanks to a spirited comeback from the home side who trailed by 5 points as the referee blew for the second half water break.

Joe Smith played a significant part as he set up Kyle Moran for the opening point following the resumption before slotting a free to leave just 3 between the teams. The action was hectic for the closing minutes as Tones chased the game with the referee issuing several cards to keep order. Don Ash squandered an easy free which would have given them a cushion. Tones surged down the field but hit a wide. With the game in the melting pot some good combination play put substitute Thomas Blaney through on goal. To the dismay of the Tones supporters the shot was parried by the goalkeeper, but Joe Smith pounced on the rebound to blast to the net. The sides were level. The visitors managed to nose in front again but in the dying seconds Blaney fired over to level the game to the delight of the home supporters.

The Tones had opened brightly with Joe Smith (point) and Tom Gavigan (goal) opening the scoring. Don Ash replied by hitting 8 points to lead by 3 at the water break. By half time Tones trailed 2 05 to 1 12. Goals kept the home side in this game with Cian O Neill netting twice while Peter Carroll’s long-range effort deceived the goalie to give Tones a lifeline just when it was needed. Joe Smith’s accuracy from frees was also a factor with a converted free from the side-line being a highlight.

This was a whole team effort, but standout performances came from Joe Smith and the O Neill brothers. Eoin Donegan won good primary possession in mid field, ably assisted by Gavigan who drove forward at every opportunity. The tight marking Sean Moriarty was very effective while veteran Alan Mc Keever was a steadying influence in the hectic closing minutes.
