Leitrim GAA thread - 6 Like(s)

Replying To Leitrim2024:  "It's only a few years ago that Fenagh and Leitrim Gaels were playing Intermediate, while struggling senior clubs like Drumreilly, Bornacoola and Carrigallen were fighting tooth and nail to stay senior. The one team up and one team down system must go. Team strengths can change drastically from year to year with retirements, injuries and travel. Dromahair, Aughnasheelin and Gortletteragh have all been affected. I wouldn't be too critical of them. Ive no doubt these teams are working as hard as any other club. However no matter what, one of these clubs is guaranteed to still be senior in 3 years. If you take the 5 biggest clubs in Intermediate at the moment for example; Annaduff, Melvin Gaels, Allen Gaels, Carrigallen and Kiltubrid. Any one or all of these are capable of developing into a strong senior team. But with the current system, one of these is guaranteed remain Intermediate for the next 5 years. Longford gaa who are our closest comparison in terms of population and club numbers have 2 groups of 6 in their senior championship. I would do the same for the Intermediate Championship as well. I think it's the way to go with 2 teams relegated and 2 teams promoted."
Don't be looking across the border at our championships....they are a complete mess and have been for a decade or more. We have 21 clubs in the county of which 12 are considered Senior by our County Board. Killashee came up from Intermediate last year and pulled the plug after 1 game. This year Ballymahon came up and they are no better than a lower end Intermediate club and possibly Junior in most counties. They took heavy beatings in their first 3 games and then went out last weekend against Clonguish and lost 11-19 to 0-06.....no that is not a misprint 11 goals and 19 points!!!! We should only have 8 Senior clubs, 8 intermediate and 5 Junior. The problem with us is that too many boys in suits in the weaker Senior clubs do not want their club classed lower than Senior. For a player would you not want to be going out in February training, thinking you had a chance of silverware in Intermediate or Junior instead of looking forward to beatings in the Senior?!!

After a night to sleep on and reflect, I take back what I said about the players. What I said was heat of the moment and bore out of frustration. We have to remember, these are amateur lads who give up their free time to represent our county. It's not as if they deliberately went out to get hammered yesterday. They burst their b@lls a few nights a week when they could be at home with their feet up watching football on the TV or whatever. I want to apologise to the squad on what I said.

Replying To Garmin:  "I think that is pretty harsh!! we have 3 senior hurling teams in Longford with all struggling for numbers to complete in a championship and you want to have a dig at so called 'bigger clubs' all trying to compete with other sports and also we have the least amount of clubs in the whole country!! if thats the case you need go get onto all local 'bigger clubs' outside the county to get the finger out and get a hurling team up and running! a stupid comment to make!"
Well said. If these clubs started up a hurling team Clonguish would lose one or 2 players to Drumlish and Killoe, I'm sure Wolfe Tones would be the same and Slashers would proabbly have no team as the majority of their players come from other clubs around the county!

We played a challenge against Killoe in Monaduff. An off the ball incident happened on the field and a row broke out. It got out of hand and a few words and pushing resulted on the stand side. A member of the Killoe committee at the time was involved and ended up pushing a female from Drumlish who is a part of my family. She fell to the ground as a result and suffered a cut and bruising. It all settled down the but an apology never came from that individual or the club towards that person. That is why I have a chip on my shoulder with Killoe

You'll be glad to know Oddball, I'm finished with answering questions about my personal life to that fool. Only one child on this forum and I'm sure he'll be back spouting rubbish to try and get another reaction, but I will not be firing back. It takes a bigger man to walk away and that's what I'll be doing.

Abysmal.... Absolutely shocking stuff in Pearse Park today. I don't know where we go from here. Season is now finished for us.

Well yesterday was a disaster. From getting soaked to throwing away a winning position my day was just terrible! Well done to Ballymahon, they took their chances when they got them but I have a feeling they'll be straight back down next year. In the Senior, delighted for Colmcille. Mullinalaghtas time has come to an end. An aging team with nothing coming through. Apart from their starting 15 (who never seem to get injured or suspended) they have nothing on the bench. And yesterday when the pitch was heavy and wet they had no fresh legs to bring on. Well done Colmcille and Ballymahon.

By all accounts we were robbed in Armagh today. 2 black cards that no one knew what they were for, A third player sent off for 2 yellows and then Armagh score a goal that should of been a free out! Questioned the appointment of the ref before the game and was proven right from what I have heard and read....and that includes people from Armagh. Great performance by our lads who were missing Sean McCormack and his brother Padraig who went off injured early in the game. Two huge losses. 3 out of our remaining games at home so no reason we can't push for promotion after today's performance.

Excellent performance from 1 to 15. Great scores kicked by Gallagher, Mimnagh and McGivney. And as said above...what about the Bull? A busted boot in the first half and instead of going straight off to get new ones he played in his socks until Longford had the ball deep in Meath territory! And that catch late on and then burst through a few Meath boys to clear his lines....hes like a fine wine!! Whatever the result against the Dubs these lads have broken a 30 year curse and deserve all the plaudits they get after today. Can't wait now to see the 60 seconds of coverage on the Sunday game tonight after they spend an hour or so showing the games they already showed live earlier today!

Replying To Cavanlife:  "monaghan vs cavan - Monaghan are u mad? Cavan are 7/4 to win and i think is a steal Monaghan are only favourites because they won last week. We came up against a strong Dublin team who did not win pulling up cus the boys he brought on like colm basquel and o gara are hardly goin to take it easy them lookin 4 a startin position. not too many teams will play a running game against the Dubs like us because we have pace and if Monaghan played a running game their tongues would b out after 10 minutes.... Cavan to win by 4 .... any Dubs agree with me on this comment???"
Calm down Cavanlife. This is only for a bit of craic and everyone is entitled to their opinion and predictions!

It's been said for the last 2 years or so on here by a few posters including myself on how to improve the leagues and championships. The problem is, there are word given for votes on the board in the promise that there is no change to the format. And I hold my hand up and say that my club got a hand one year from the Cashel club when they put forward the increase of numbers in the senior championship back in the noughties. But the CB did not see the warning signs from the Killashee debacle, but the result this weekend is even more embarrassing for them. And it's good enough for them. To the County Board - IT'S TIME YOU REDUCED THE NUMBER OF 'SENIOR' CLUBS IN LONGFORD. 21 CLUBS IN THE COUNTY AND YOU BOYS THINK 12 OF THEM ARE 'SENIOR'. OVER 50% OF THE CLUBS IN LONGFORD ARE SENIOR. WAKE UP LADS!!!!

The GAA have a lot to answer for with regarding postponing games. The one with Offaly and Derry especially. To call the game off 90 mins before throw in and was a joke. The GAA should now put these games on at a neutral venue half way or give the home advantage to the away teams or even have free admission to the re-fixed games. The risk they put those supporters and officials at when the game could of been called off at 9am was uncalled for. And why wait for the official ref to turn up to make the call? Any man, woman or child would of called that game off long before supporters got on the road.

Replying To williesboy:  "Ah it's bad form for a club to field a weakened side to get one over another club."
Did they field a weakened team? If they did it was up to them. Nothing to play for and why risk the chances of injuries on heavy pitches when they have a semi-final to play. Killoe have themselves to blame as they should have beaten a very poor Slashers team. Killoe can't complain too much about Clonguish performance today considering what they did a few years back and blantantly throw a game to knock out Clonguish. Best of luck to the 4 remaining teams. A lot of people know I have no sympathy for Killoe after what happened between themselves and the Gaels back in 97.......we still remember and will never forget.

Back in 1999 we played Cavan in Breffni in a League game. The night before the game a former county player and at the time current Fr. Manning Gaels player was killed in motorbike accident. The already selected team had 8 Gaels players starting and Longford asked for the game to be postponed but their request was denied. Longford took to the field with 8 changes to the starting line up and had only 3 subs to choose from after the changes were made. We ended up scoring a last minute goal to win the game. Its one game that will always stick with me along with the Mayo (qualifiers) and Kerry (league) victories.

We will be no where near top 2. Christie has come in and ruined what little we had. Between having his favourites and falling out and dropping some of our best young players, he has destroyed the senior team. But we also have to blame the county board with destroying our championships, which in turn filters into the county team. We have lads from Intermediate clubs who in any other county would be Junior or Junior B teams. We have 3 lads who are from Killashee who could not field a team in the senior championship 2 years ago and last year got relegated to Division 3 of the county league! We have another lad from a team who in 1 game last year conceded something like 11-19 (yes, eleven goals) in 1 Senior Championship game!!! The team that beat them that day does not even have 1 player on the panel!!! We will be lucky to get anything against Waterford or London unfortunately.
