Shane Annett sent over a late free as Down edged Limerick by 0-18 to 1-14 in Rathkeale for their second win in as many games in Division 3 of the Allianz Football League.
Conor Laverty’s men had held a 0-9 to 0-6 lead at the halfway stage and extended it with points from Ceilum Doherty and Patrick Havern (free), but Limerick hung in through James Naughton’s frees and a goal by Danny Neville in the 61st minute would bring them back to within a point.
Daniel Guinness saw a two-pointer in response wiped out by Eliah Riordan’s effort from distance and Naughton brought the home side level late on, but there'd still be time for the Mourne men to earn a free which Annett kept his cool to convert.
The later game in Division 3 saw Wexford comfortable in their 0-23 to 0-9 victory over Laois at Chadwicks Wexford Park.
The Slaneysiders backed up their opening win over Fermanagh last weekend with a strong start against the O’Moore men that saw them 0-10 to 0-4 up after half an hour and a couple of two-point frees from ‘keeper Darragh Brooks in the second-half helped them coast to what was a 14-point victory in the end.
In Division 4, Carlow also made it back-to-back wins by defeating Wicklow on a 1-15 to 2-9 scoreline at Netwatch Cullen Park.
Paddy McDonnell netted a 13th minute goal for the hosts while scores from Mikey Bambrick and Chris Blake down the home stretch would prove crucial in dealing Oisin McConville’s men their first loss of the campaign.
