The Musings Of Tom Smith - 5 Like(s)

Replying To tomsmith:  "Tomsmith here from Cavan This Post has veered into a pathway that was never intended ie posters talking about Millwall , Leeds ect . I say again " Irelands call " let the Ulster Council of the Gaa take it on board and encourage the Ulster Clubs to play it. While composed by a formed Londonderry man Phil Cou---er I feel it would be lovely to hear it being belted out in Silverbridge, Cross and in or around the Antrim Gaa grounds. Sure the Brethern would then feel part of our wonderful organisation"
Tom, you're around a good while now and while I find your ideas - how shall I phrase this - innovative, your referencing Londonderry seriously devalued your credibility. What did the great Mrs.Tom think of it? I'd say she reddened your ear and you were lucky she didn't commandeer the phone on you.

It's unlike you not to have the schedule of County Board expenses for year ending 30 Sept. 2023. Team managers and selectors expenses = €163,057. The overall costs for that year between one thing and another amounted to €960,762 including €74,050 on sports gear….A fine comprehensive report in fairness. Glad to be of assistance.

Replying To Gaa_lover:  "No such thing as a soft penalty its either a penalty or not. For that incident and by the letter of the law the correct decision was made on that penalty. Long after it and well into the 2nd half the match was there to be won by Mayo and in the end found a way to lose it."
You could say that Mayo had her in the bed and never touched her…….

Replying To Bowser93:  "You'd think someone with 649 posts on here would know where to find details of gaa fixtures in Leitrim. https://www.leitrimgaa.ie/fixtures-next-10-days/"
I managed that part by myself. Now if you could just point me to the specific sub-section that informs the general public as to whom would be 'ar an feadóg' then I'd be sorted. But seeing as a courteous poster has answered my query, your "witty" assistance is no longer required. You may now re-examine your 6 posts (none of which I've seen) and deem yourself an internet legend.

I'm always at a loss to understand how a county such as ourselves can look so disdainfully on the Tailteann Cup. Wouldn't it be welcomed in Ballinamore and Carrick-on-Shannon with the same enthusiasm as the Sam Maguire is greeted in Tralee or Killarney. Sometimes we have to pinch ourselves to realise our standing in the big scheme. The reality of it is we eventually finished 29th in the league and as we know the table doesn't lie.

Replying To Drax_the_destroyer:  "When Joyce was asked to manage the Connacht team it was agreed that he'd have all Connacht county managers at the time part of the management. Of course some are now speculating that he'll be the new Galway coach."
He is indeed another addition to the already bulging Galway backroom team. He got one of those cool jackets that about 100 other hangers-on got last weekend. I'm disappointed that his head got turned so easily by Joyce and so with that in mind I'll withhold my good wishes. Fortunately for him the Supermacs franchise won't see him starve.

Leitrim 1-18 Monaghan 0-16. Another outstanding achievement from our hurlers. It's beginning to look like it's time to throw the entire resources available to the county board in that direction. A dedicated bunch of lads giving it their all deserve the fullest support…. Will it happen ?

Replying To Square_B:  "Just about got over the line.... we'll be going no further in the Championship that's for sure anyhow. We might get a decent draw in the Tailteann Cup but I wouldn't be hopeful of beating too many in that competition either. 2023 is where it's at now. I think we've gone backwards under Moran but promotion next year is now the goal. No excuses. It would be great to head to New York with that under the belt."
Pessimistic much? We got over the line by the skin of our teeth when we should have been able to close it out from the 60th. minute. That will require analysis and correction. Will we progress further ? Unlikely. To say we've regressed under Moran isn't exactly factual. We won 4 league games, losing to a smarter, more battle-hardened Cavan in the opener before coughing up the points against today's opponents. At full strength and with a little tweaking to the full back line we have the players to give the Tailteann Cup,a rattle. What harm can it do, the lads are doing their best, it's encouragement they need not punishment.

Replying To Stmunnsriver:  "well said , could not agree more, spillane the modst over rated footballer in history, was ahead of his time with fitness and movement but now that all backs would match that they would not give him a kick of it, he was never brave and he would not go near most of the top wing backs now"
I often wondered how he annexed the 8 Celtic Crosses and the mere 9 All-Stars myself.

Phenomenal performance from our hurlers defeating Lancashire 0-21 to 2-10. It's getting to the stage where defunding the footballers may have to be looked at. Out of interest I wonder how much of last years expenditure of €791k was spent on the hurlers…. Answers on a postcard etc.,

In an era when it's cool to whinge about trivial things and fail to recognise the good in other issues, may I compliment the staff associated with Carlow's Dr.Cullen Park on todays service. I enquired during the week about wheelchair access to be given a detailed approach. This mechanism excelled themselves today. Top notch service/courtesy - gentlemen to their boots. Bad result on the pitch but the guys on the gates won me over.

Next Leitrim Manager. - 2 Like(s)
The word on the street now is that Walsh has hitched his pony to the Kildare trap. Good luck to him, at least he'll have a day or two in Croke Park out of them. We actually need a manager who can explain and demonstrate the rudiments of defending to our lads. No point in putting up big scores from our alleged hot-shot forwards if we're conceding more at the other end. Will those in charge factor this in, not a chance. They're huddled down looking at the money in the biscuit tin and wondering whom they'll seduce at the minimum cost. Do we expect anything else? I, for one, don't think so.

I'd nip in here occasionally to see what's troubling the great man and he rarely disappoints. This hasn't gone quite as anticipated so a revisit to the divisional teams issue could be on the cards.

Congrats to principally the squad of players who put in the hard graft, the management team and the long-suffering supporters on a fully deserved promotion to D3. 5 wins from 7 doesn't always guarantee promotion but in this case it sufficed. Huge credit to the management and players of Wexford who went about their business in the true spirit of the game agus mar focail scoir - commiserations to our neighbours Longford who just came up short. The best of luck to all for the coming weeks.

Replying To blacklion1:  "Any opinions or idea's on how Leitrim should set up this year. My thinking would be to play with 11 Backs and 3 quick, good ball winning forwards. Play 12 behind 1/2 way and stack the remaining 3 in a line. Forwards come to mind such as Tom Prior, Honeyman, 2x O'Rourkes, Keith Keegan, Darragh Rooney, Jack Heslin, Paul Keaney, Evan Sweeney, Harkin, Darren Cox, Keith B/ Barry Mc may need to play further out the field to transition the play but could also rotate."
From reading previous posts it seems the vast majority of the names you threw out are unavailable for one reason or another. We'll just have to make do with whoever is available. County football isn't the Premiership - it's hard to blame lads, many of whom have given terrific service, from stepping back. These lads are in the prime of their lives - sprawling on Bondi beats slogging in the frost in Annaduff.

Tremendous result from Aughrim. I admit to having reservations about the management appointment but I'm prepared to rescind these views. A battling performance that will instil confidence in the lads themselves. Great result and full credit to all involved.

The good news is that the athlete's enemy, the accursed drink, is exempt from blame for this debacle. Our good friends, the County Board, will be along shortly to encourage support of the many fundraising ventures being undertaken to foster support for Gaelic games in the county. Good luck with all that. A quick peep at the reality monitor shows us well below par after 2 comprehensive beatings in D4. That's the stark reality of where we are, out of our depth in the basement division. There will no doubt be the usual and possibly some novel excuses trotted out but this is beyond acceptance. It would appear that we won't, after all, be the ones to dethrone the Dubs.

Replying To S1234:  "Sure you wanted the game in Cavan hardly fair to Mayo either. You can hardly calm Rossie land a home game for us that's quite insulting ! Thought you were meant to beat us out the gate by half time . You are not that good and won't be winning Sam. It will go to Armagh again . You can't even be graceful after winning a match and knocking us out by saying hard luck to mayo . No you have to moan about the venue again! We are a young team and will be better next year with Durcan having more game time & Tommy C back also hearing Oisin Mullin will be back. Not going to say best of luck to you lot after McGuiness and your comments on here up Armagh !"
This emotional summation didn't go so well for you. As ever, the lack of scoring forwards cost you. Game management at the death was non-existent but Donegal's execution was exactly that - an execution. Pinning your hopes on the return of Tommy C mightn't work either.

The criteria for progress has been there since the inception of the competition. It wasn't a problem before and the participants knew where the trapdoor was. We're making our exit after a victory that reflects well on the lads who donned the jersey in difficult times. The entire squad who've slogged since January deserve recognition. The no-show debacle wasn't their making. We need, as Bertie used to say, "a period of reflection", run off the county competitions and reset.

An incredibly poor performance today. We were out-muscled, out-fought, out-run by a team we defeated a couple of weeks ago. Today we made Laois look like vintage Dublin. They were hungrier, more committed, slicker, faster both in limb and brain and this was reflected on the scoreboard. There wasn't any great evidence of corrective signals coming from the sideline either. Withdrawing Riordan O'Rourke (0-02) was the old chestnut again - we're losing badly, take off the corner forward. Ryan displayed the vast repertoire of skills that he possesses and can rightly be proud of his days work. The championship beckons next weekend and so the merry dance continues. It will be difficult to inspire enthusiasm in the squad after today's humiliation so I'd say, provisionally, it's safe to book your holidays around the weekend of the Connacht final.
