Derek Lyng has been appointed as Kilkenny’s new senior hurling manager on a three-year term.

The county’s former U20 manager was confirmed as Brian Cody’s successor last night (Thursday) – a dozen days after the 11-time All-Ireland winning boss called time on his remarkable 24-year reign with the Cats.

Lyng won six All-Ireland SHC medals under Cody as a player before having to call time on his career as the result of a hip injury. He also won nine Leinster titles and two All-Star awards in the famous Black and Amber stripes.

The Emeralds clubman, who has yet to finalise his backroom team, served as Cody’s selector between 2014 and 2019, earning two more Celtic Crosses, and was at the helm for his native county earlier this summer when they defeated Limerick by a point in the All-Ireland U20HC final.

The process for Kilkenny chiefs to find a new U20 hurling manager has already commenced, while Niall Bergin has been ratified as the county’s new U17 boss for the 2023 season.
