The Limerick hurling fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the death of Paul Carey in a car accident in Dubai.
Just two weeks shy of his 42nd birthday, Carey won three Limerick SHC titles with his beloved Patrickswell, captaining them in 2003, and also made two appearances for his county in the National League. He made his county inter-county debut against Tipperary in the South-East League in November 1998. His first National League start came against Derry in 2002 when he lined out alongside his famous brother Ciaran.
An uncle of current Limerick star Cian Lynch, the deceased also played soccer for Limerick FC.
It's understood that Paul, who was teaching English and Religion in Dubai, was expecting his second child with his heartbroken wife Anna. They were planning to relocate home before Christmas, and Anna and the couple's young son, Fionn, had already done so while Paul was making last-minute arrangements to finalise their full-time move back to Ireland when tragedy struck.
Many tributes have been paid to Paul, with Patrickswell GAA requesting that he "is remembered in your prayers and his family are supported in their hour of need."
Patrickswell GAA and whole community are saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Paul Carey in Dubai.
