Six-time All-Ireland winner Paul Flynn reckons there’s “a freshness and a freedom” to Mayo that could see them trouble Kerry in Sunday’s Sam Maguire Cup decider.

Andy Moran’s men have been in impressive form as of late, particularly in attack where their full-forward line has combined for 2-36 in the team’s last two outings.

Speaking to Des Cahill on RTÉ Radio's Morning Ireland ahead of this weekend’s final at Croke Park, Flynn ultimately tipped Kerry to retain their title, but feels the Westerners could make it an interesting contest if they hold their own in the opening period.

“Mayo have the weight of history around them, but this group feels different. Their younger players do not seem to carry the same scars of previous finals. There is a freshness and a freedom to them,” said the former Dublin star.

“That matters in a final if they can remain free and express themselves under pressure. The question is how that plays out in an All-Ireland final because it can work both ways.

“Ultimately Des, I think Kerry will win. They have the stronger overall team and squad, more experience of these occasions, and the sheer abundance of superstar players that can control and go find scores to win a final.

“But if Mayo survive the opening period, disrupt Kerry’s kickout and bring their own attacking line into the game early, then this could become a much more competitive final than many people expect.”
