Kilkenny great Jackie Tyrrell has backed Dean Rock over the Dublin forward’s free-taking project which purportedly charges customers a fee for lessons in placed kicking.
Twitter was set ablaze this week after a price list for Rock’s initiative popped up online, sparking debate as to whether or not it went against the GAA’s amateur ethos.
Speaking on the RTE GAA Podcast, nine-time All-Ireland winner Tyrrell stated: "First of all, if it is confirmed, for Dean Rock it's a very brave and bold move to create a business out of his talents and I would say more power to him on it," he said.
"You look at the GAA as a whole, how many managers are getting below the radar payments? Take a club or an inter-county team. Physios, they get paid for their services, nutritionists get paid for their services.
"If it's a free-taking or a goalkeeping coach, they get paid. So right across the broad spectrum of the GAA, there are payments. If he gets what he's supposedly charging for it, more power to him, and if people are willing to pay that, that's their decision.
"He's put it out there that he's willing to do whatever he wants - coaching, one-on-one lessons, multiple sessions - and he's offered that service."
