Limerick stayed on course for a third consecutive All-Ireland senior hurling championship title after edging Galway by 0-27 to 1-21 at Croke Park.

John Kiely’s men demonstrated the character of champions after Galway wiped away their four-point half-time deficit to go in front within 10 minutes of the second-half throw-in.

From there, it was a back-and-forth rollercoaster in this thoroughly entertaining semi-final clash and contribution of David Reidy off the bench, along with points from Diarmaid Byrnes, Kyle Hayes and Aaron Gillane at crucial moments were what swung it for the Treaty men in the end.

Gillane had seven points to his name in the first-half as the holders went in leading by 0-16 to 0-12 at the break but a brilliant take and emphatic finish from Brian Concannon early in the restart brought the sides level.

The Tribesmen got their noses in front twice after that but couldn’t pull away from the Shannonsiders as 19 wides over the 70 minutes at headquarters cost the dearly.

Limerick themselves mounted 15 wides in the game but were still able to get the key scores down the home stretch which now leaves them 70 minutes away from another Liam McCarthy Cup triumph with Kilkenny standing in their way in two weeks’ time.
