Kilcoo opened their Down SFC defence with a 4-9 to 1-12 victory over old rivals Mayobridge at Pairc Esler yesterday.
The game came to life in the second quarter when a Conleth O’Hare goal for Mayobridge was cancelled out by a Jerome Johnston major at the other end. But Ciaran McKeever's charges grabbed the last two points of the half per Caolan Gallagher and Cory Quinn to take a 1-8 to 1-6 lead into half-time.
However, the three-in-a-row chasing Magpies up the ante after the restart and ran out flattering six-point winners thanks to further goals from Jerome Johnston, Ryan Johnston and Miceal Rooney.
