Tipperary's Seamus Callanan celebrates scoring the second goal of the game
Former Hurler of the Year Seamus Callanan has brought the curtain down on a stellar 16-year senior inter-county career with Tipperary.
One of the deadliest forwards of his generation, the soon-to-be 35-year-old won three All-Ireland SHC medals in 2010, '16 and '19 as well as a National League title in 2008 and four All-Stars. His career peaked in 2019 when was named Hurler of the Year and also captained Tipp to Liam MacCarthy Cup glory.
The Drom & Inch sharpshooter scored 40 championship goals - the last of which came against Offaly in this year's All-Ireland SHC preliminary quarter-final - despite being blighted by injury in recent years.
In a statement released this morning, Callanan said: "The highlight of my playing career was undoubtedly captaining Tipperary to All-Ireland success in 2019. Coming back to Tipperary and Drom and Inch with the Liam McCarthy Cup is something I will treasure forever. I will always be very grateful to Liam Sheedy for entrusting me with the role of captain.
"I have been fortunate to meet many great people during my time hurling with Tipperary and through the GAA, but Eamon O'Shea was special amongst them all. As a mentor and friend, his guidance had a significant impact on my career, and I want to thank him most sincerely."
